New shoes, a Bumblebee and a first pitch

I don't typically repeat Guy Fieri's tweets, but these past few days have seen a newsy @ChefGuyFieri Twitter account.

We first heard about a line of Guy Fieri Globe shoes in October, 2010. Looks like the mock-up is done, @ChefGuyFieri - "Chillin' with Sherwood @globeskate checkin' out my new signature model kix...comin soon"

Guy Fieri had a briefphone chat with radio personality Mancow, based in Chicago. Here's Guy on Cooking Bacon on the Mancow Experience. Click here to listen.

On Friday, April 1, Guy participated in a Food Network upfront in Chicago. He, Vanilla Ice, Mancow and ?? had dinner that evening. @ChefGuyFieri - "Headin’ outta Chi Town after a big night with the Food Network Krew and my homie, Rob Van Winkle (@vanillaice)…Vanilla Ice!"

On Saturday, April 2, Kent Porter of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat caught Guy Fieri throwing the first pitch at a Little League Game. "I was totally out of position for the pitch, but shot it anyway," Porter wrote. "After a strike to home plate, Fieri ran the outer perimeter of the diamond and high- fived players on the field." Not only that, but he was wearing the new shoes!

Photo: Kent Porter / Press Democrat

And very exciting: Guy has some new heavy metal to add to his collection of cars. @ChefGuyFieri - "Bitchin' Camaro...thanks to my bruthas at Chevy! First yellow conv off tha line!"

The Twitterverse is asking, when will we see the Bumblebee on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives! Is it time for an updated set of wheels for the show?

Pix from "wake up with waffles" event in NYC

This morning, from 6:00 am to noon ET, Hampton Hotels, Guy Fieri and his son Hunter, handed out an estimated 7000 free waffles to New Yorkers at Herald Square Park in New York City. It was quite the media event.

I expect there'll be more pictures and video from the event - I'll update this post with more as they come in.

Guy Fieri on his father

Guy Fieri sent out this tweet in early May, My grandma loved this mag!, she’s not with us but it feels good I made the cover. Check it. The June 2010, Father's Day edition of Guideposts is out now with Guy Fieri on the cover, and it's available online. Here are a few quotes from the article:

"My biggest inspiration, the best role model this Guy could ever hope for…it’s my dad, hands down."

"If it weren’t for my dad I would never have become an entrepreneur or had the guts to start my own restaurants."

Guy relates the story of how his Amazing Pretzel business came to be, with the help of his father, James Ferry.

"We got a three-wheeler from Goodwill. After school, I met Dad at his buddy’s wood shop and we built a pretzel cart. I painted it yellow.

'What do you want to call it?' Dad asked. 'The Awesome Pretzel Cart,' I decided. That summer at the town fair I set up my cart and sold hot pretzels. I made a thousand bucks. A sixth grader with his own business. It was awesome!"

"Everything I’ve ever done, he’s been there encouraging me, working with me to figure things out and, yes, sometimes kicking me in the rear.

Now I’m a father myself, with two boys, Hunter, 13, and Ryder, four. My parents live next door, and the boys spend a lot of time with their grandfather—they call him Jamps."

How did Guy Fieri go from food to game shows?

From Twitter yesterday, @chefguyfieri - Ever wondered how Guy Fieri became Minute To Win It host? Of course, I know there are quite a few who do. Here is a vid for you.

@bobhellman - Dude, ease up on the double promotion with ur Twitter handle.. We KNOW it's from U....

Actually, I don't think it was from Guy, at least not directly. Guy Fieri has hired Zenergy Works SEO (website), and I think several recent tweets are coming from them.

From Zenergy's press release, April 15, 2010 - "Zenergy Works will be promoting and shaping the information that Guy puts online to more effectively reach his online audience."

Haha, I had to laugh. Isn't that what we've been doing? :)

But back to the point - Guy Fieri recently told becksmithhollywood.com about how he got into the Game Show Host game.
"I've got a good sense of humor and could see being involved in a sitcom or a movie." He confesses that NBC didn't approach him about broadening his professional horizons by hosting a game show.

"My agent," he says, "asked what were other things I might like to do that I wasn't doing and I thought, ‘Well, I'm a game show fan. I love the way the hosts can interact with contestants.’ And I said, 'I'd love to host a prime time game show.' I didn't think anyone would take me seriously. But not only did they, they designed a show I feel I was born to do. It's perfect for me."
I'm not sure if I see Guy in a sitcom, but I sure can see him doing a voice for a Pixar film, eh? Haha!

From a satellite interview in March 2010, Starrymag.com and others asked similar questions: How did Guy Fieri go from food to game shows? (edited to salient points)
Q. Very cool. So how did you - how did the (producers of the show) find you?

Guy Fieri: ... You know what? It was actually a collaboration between our Executive Producer, you know, Craig Plestis, and Jason Hodes from William Morris Endeavor.

Two had met two years ago in I believe it was France. There was a conference that was going on there. And they just started to have this, you know, discussion about, you know, I’ve got this new guy that’s on the Food Network. His name is Guy Fieri....

And that was it. I remember Jason telling me he had met this guy. And I bet you someday we’ll have some, you know, some program. Well as everybody knows in this business there’s a lot of ideas and designs and hopes and wishes and dreams.

And the fact that this has really come to, you know, fruition that it’s just, you know, what do you say? I’m amazed. And I appreciate the opportunity because I am a chef. And a restaurant owner, a dad. And I do have other shows. You know, I’ve got other things going on.

And to be chosen to do this, you couldn’t - I’ll just tell it to you this way. You couldn’t have designed a game ever that was going to be more fitting to me and my style than this.

And that’s not just a cliché statement. I mean I don’t know what you could have called the game. But this right here, this is how - this is what - you know this is how - this is me.
On a programming note, we have two All New episodes of Minute to Win It this week:

Mr. Fieri goes to Washington

Jimmy Stewart went to Washington in a 1939 movie with a political motive and an iconic filibuster. The National Ledger recently reported that Guy Fieri is going to Washington D.C. too, but with plans to cook for the Obamas and the White House staff, next month.
The dynamic Fieri assures us the event will not be recorded for the cameras, that "This is something that has nothing to do with television." He adds, "My 13-year-old son, Hunter, is going to cook with me. He's done so before, on some of my 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' Food Network show. [Er, that would be Guy's Big Bite and Guy Off the Hook. ~D] I have strong feelings about educating children through the empowerment of cooking. My son Ryder wants to cook with me, too, but he's only 4 so we'll wait a bit."
For the White House menu, Guy Fieri said he'd make "a little Italian and something creative -- a BLT sandwich made with duck." Would that be a DBLT? I'd trade that for a filibuster any day.
Slamma Jamma Parmigiana - Food NetworkTV

A January 2010 article in the Press Democrat mentioned Guy Fieri's desire to visit the White House, "he's preparing to visit the White House and the Obamas to promote cooking with kids," so this is something that has been in the works for quite some time.

Guy Fieri has long supported young people learning how to cook and to consider culinary arts has a hobby at least, or as a profession. He has been actively involved in the National ProStart program, with a recent television special, Top of the Class, and by hiring high school culinary students to help cook, prep and serve during the Guy Fieri Road Show.

In May 2009, Guy Fieri teamed up again with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver passing a resolution that the second Saturday in May be proclaimed "Cook With Your Kids Day" in California. Guy has said he wants to take it national.

That sounds like a nice conversation to have over a DBLT, eh?
-------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, Guy Fieri is scheduled to appear on the new / old Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 10, 2010. Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame is also scheduled to be on the show.

Celebrity Chef night at Palapa Joe's, with Guy Fieri

I mentioned in an earlier post, Guy Fieri spent some well-earned vacation time in La Manzanilla, Mexico in late January, 2010. In fact, that's where he celebrated his 42nd birthday, with friends and family.

For the third year in a row, Guy was celebrity chef at Palapa Joe’s restaurant in La Manzanilla. His January 26, 2010 fund-raising dinner featured "Asian cuisine that sated and delighted diners lucky enough to get a reservation," according to the Guadalajara Reporter.

Palapa Joe's started by getting the word out on January 12, "Guy's coming to town pretty soon...."

And on Guy's birthday, January 22, they threw "quite a birthday party for our friend Guy Fieri....lots of fun. ...Guy Fieri cooks Tuesday."

Guy Fieri’s Chef Night at Palapa Joe's has become so popular, the Guadalajara Reporter wrote, "two seatings were required to feed everyone this year. After 80 reservations, the restaurant had to turn hopefuls away days before the scheduled event. Testament to La Manzanilla’s grapevine, the dinner was not advertised; news spread by word of mouth.

Phew...Guy et al did a great job today....think the final tally was 80 mas o menos. A large contribution is on the way to the kindergarten kitchen project. - Palapa Joe's

Palapa Joe's cooked over 30 kilos of meat to make Guy Fieri's Mongolian Beef and Ginger-Marinated Chicken, served with Hong Kong Noodles and Barbecued-Pork Fried Rice. "And it’s not like one can just hop over to our local Safeway for rice-paper wraps for almost 200 spring rolls in peanut sauce. Fieri creates an event!"

All of Guy Fieri's family was in on the act. Guy's son, Hunter, and his father, Jim Ferry, worked in the kitchen and in the bar, and Guy's mother, Penny Ferry, sold raffle tickets for a copy of More Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and an autographed Ergo Chef’s knife.

Guy Fieri worked the hot woks and "still managed to schmooze with patrons, pose for pictures and sign autographs, never losing his million-dollar smile."

Proceeds from the event benefited the local kindergarden, receiving a substantial donation toward building a kitchen, so all the children are guaranteed at least one nutritious meal each day.

We broke Guy's son Hunter in as a barman - Palapa Joe's

The Fieri family has been visiting La Manzanilla each winter for years and is planning to construct a home there. Jim and Penny Ferry donate a major portion of their time working with an orphanage in Colima.

Guy Fieri: supporting troops here and overseas

Here's a Veteren's Day post, a day early. But it's never too early to thank those who fight for our freedoms.

Guy Fieri will be donating copies of his new book More Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and copies of DVD's from Triple D to soldiers serving overseas.

Recently, when in Hawaii filming for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Guy Fieri, his son Hunter and his crew worked with Navy cooks and prepared a meal at Pearl Harbor for the military stationed there and their families.

Guy's Big Bite backyard barbecue recipes

For all of Guy Fieri's recipes from Guy's Big Bite (and Guy Off the Hook), visit All About Guy's Big Bite.

Several of Guy Fieri's backyard barbecue recipes are featured in the July 2009 issue of Family Circle magazine, now posted on Parents.com. And what are the recommendations for a backyard meal? Several recipes from Guy's Big Bite and two new ones.

Guy Fieri with sons Ryder (3) and Hunter (12)

Jimmy's Favorite Garlic Bread - recipe
-
a sourdough loaf baked with Italian-seasoned garlic butter and topped with a tomato basil salsa, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and Parmesan cheese.

This recipe first aired on the second episode in the first season of Guy's Big Bite, called Kickin' Cajun Alfredo. Other recipes from that episode are Cajun Chicken Alfredo and Caesar Salad.

New! Asian Street Sandwiches - recipe
- sliced grilled pork roast topped with Asian mint-marinated cucumbers, lettuce, cilantro and mayonnaise blended with oyster and chili garlic sauces.

The pork is marinated with the same flavors found in the rest of the sandwich plus garlic and ginger. Guy first tried a similar sandwich on the road and developed his own version of it.
(more from this episode)

Gaucho Steak with 4-Herb Chimichurri - recipe
- a grilled skirt steak, marinated in tequila, lemon and lime juice, garlic and cilantro, topped with a chimichurri sauce of vinegar and oil, onion, peppers, chiles, herbs and spices.

You just don't get more classic Fieri than those flavors. This recipe was part of Guy's Big Bite's fourth season, an episode called South of the Border. Other recipes included Spinach and Chick Pea Sauté (recipe) and the Tequila Lime Tart pictured above.

Chili Rice - recipe
- a spiced rice dish flavored with onions, peppers, garlic and chilis, bolstered with tomatoes, ground beef or turkey and kidney beans.

Perhaps my all-time favorite episode of Guy's Big Bite, this recipe is from Shotgun Bird in the third season. The show also featured Big Bud's Beer Can Chicken, Guid-Olives and a favorite drink from the college days, Shoot the Root.

New! Bayou BBQ Chop Salad - recipe
- Barbecue saucy chicken on a salad of lettuce, cucumber, tomato and mushrooms with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing and topped with fried onions, cheese and pepperoncini.

The chicken is grilled or broiled, then chopped into pieces and combined with bbq sauce. The recipe describes how to make your own fried onions, similar to the ones Guy used to re-invent the classic green bean casserole, The Mean Green, from Dear Food Network, Thanksgiving Disasters.

Tequila Lime Tart - recipe
- a classic lime pie filling (just add tequila!) on a vanilla wafer and pine nut crust.

Also from the South of the Border episode, this is an easy and tasty pie. I've replaced the pine nuts with macadamia nuts and added lime zest to the filling. Any way, it's a winner.

Yes, and Football too

A friend sent me this picture of Guy at the NY Jets at Oakland Raiders game, from October 19, 2008. Oakland won that day, 13 to 16. Guy brought some luck? The Raiders have only won three games this season, against the Kansas City Chiefs (no brainer there), the Jets, and the Denver Broncos of all teams.

We're avid fans of football in our house, and Sundays always mean tons of friends and tons of food. It's usually some kind of meat that's cooked low and slow; this week, Pot Roast.

Dorable Pot Roast
Ingredients
1 3-lb chuck pot roast
2 T kosher salt
1 T fresh ground black pepper
1 T Italian seasoning
1 T garlic powder
1 T onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon coriander
1 cup bold red wine (burgundy or cabernet)
1 cup beef broth
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
2 turnips, 1-inch cubes
2 carrots, 1-inch slices
1 yellow onion, chopped
6 cloves garlic, halved
3 T butter
3 T all-purpose flour

Directions
Combine spices in a bowl and rub on both sides of roast. Let rest about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. On stovetop, sear roast in a hot roasting pan, about 10 minutes each side. Add wine, broth, rosemary; cover and roast in oven 90 minutes. Add vegetables; cook another 30 minutes and remove from oven. (can be done one day ahead and refrigerated)
Pour juices into a 3-cup measuring cup; remove everything from the roasting pan and set aside. On stovetop at medium heat, melt butter in roasting pan; add flour and cook, constantly stirring, about 10 minutes until the roux is no longer yellow, but rather a light tan in color. Slowly pour in the juices, constantly stirring, to make a gravy.
Slice the roast against the grain; add roast and vegetables back into the pan*, cover and keep warm until you're ready to eat.
*easily transferred into a Crock Pot, if you're traveling.

Serve over Crunchy Potato Slices

Crunchy Potato Slices
Ingredients
3 medium russet potatoes, not peeled, sliced into 1/4-inch chips
2 T kosher salt
2 T cracked black pepper
1/4 cup canola oil

Directions
Preheat broiler on high.
Rinse potato slices well in very cold water. Drain thoroughly, and pat dry if necessary. Toss in a large bowl with seasoning and oil.
In a sheet pan (or cookie sheet) place slices in a single layer and broil about 10 minutes, or until just beginning to brown. Flip the chips over and broil again until a nice dark golden brown, about another 7 minutes.
