"Guy's Burger Joint" on Carnival cruise ships

On Monday, October 3, 2011, the internet was a-buzz with an announcement from Carnival Cruise Lines - their partnership with Guy Fieri to offer a free shipboard dining venue called Guy's Burger Joint, featuring amazing hand-crafted burgers and fresh-cut fries and special recipes created exclusively for Carnival.

@GuyFieri tweeted, "It's official...just launched Guy's Burger Joint on Carnival Cruise Lines!"

A prnewswire.com release states that Guy's Burger Joint "will debut aboard the Carnival Liberty following the completion of a refurbishment later this month and will be rolled out to several other Carnival 'Fun Ships' over the next few years as part of the line's Fun Ship 2.0 fleetwide enhancement program."

At a New York City press conference about the partnership, Doug Parker, @CruiseRadio tweeted, "Guy Fieri cooking up for us at #FunShip2dot0 event. #cruise."

A variety of innovative condiments, everything from chipotle mayonnaise and a special barbecue sauce to garlic aioli and three hot sauces, will be available at two self-serve condiment stations. For guests who like a little more spice, seasonings like garlic and herb, sea salt and hot chili also will be offered, along with a selection of toppings such as sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, blue cheese crumbles and vine-ripened tomatoes.

Located adjacent to the ship's main pool area, the decor of Guy's Burger Joint is imbued with the chef's passion for car culture and his California roots. Life-size surfboards and car elements such as car bumpers, grilles and chrome pipes adorn the walls, while car hoods hang on the ceiling over the two condiment stations. Servers will wear old school mechanic uniforms with their own personalized nickname featured.

Carnival is also partnering with comedian George Lopez to launch new shipboard comedy clubs. @LibbyTaggart tweeted, "Guy Fieri cooking up some incredible burgers @carnivalcruise press conference. George Lopez also spotted. (client)"

Lopez, one of America's favorite comedians and a popular TV personality, will become the cruise line's "curator of comedy," acting as a consultant on the vetting and hiring of comedic talent for the line's existing fleetwide comedy clubs. Lopez will play an active role in the securing of top up-and-coming comedic talent, utilizing his vast resources within the North American comedy scene. Read more about Carnival and George Lopez.

In the first phase of Carnival Cruise Lines' "Fun Ship 2.0," which extends through 2015, Carnival will invest more than $500 million across its fleet with new dining choices, more exciting bars and lounges and entertainment options.

Other partnerships are with video game giant EA SPORTS to create the first EA SPORTS Bar at sea, and Hasbro for new game shows featuring iconic games and brands.

"If in a million years you would have told me that I was going to be involved with a cruise line and doing burgers, I would have told you I would have gone to the moon first," Fieri told reporters at the Carnival-organized event.

Guy grills burgers, poolside on Carnival

On August 26, Guy Fieri tweeted, "Headin' home then off to Mexico for some fishin' and a little Cabo Wabo." But on the way, he did more than fish, he grilled burgers poolside on Carnival Splendor!

Al joked, "Just passed Guy Fieri on Deck 5 on the Carnival Splendor. Does that mean this place is a Dive?" And wrote later, "Just had a drink with him in the Casino Bar - I said, 'Gonna be a long week for you, huh?' He said, 'You ain't f'n kiddin!' Gotta love it!"

tink24 writes,
Just got back from the Splendor 8/28 - 9/4 sailing. On our first sea day we walked past the grill and saw some yummy looking burgers already made with EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine on them. There were some guys behind the grill dressed in tight black t-shirts and most were blond. One was especially blond with spikey hair. I knew they couldn't possibly be the normal grill crew, but didn't think much of it at the time. The burgers were the best I have had possibly anywhere. We found out later that Guy Fieri had been onboard until Cabo. Carnival is testing him out with the hopes of offering gourmet burgers at the grill. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works out because his burgers were AWESOME!

So good to hear!

Samantha wrote, "Had the best time on your 7 day cruise to Mexico. We even got to meet Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive in's and Dives!"

And Chris wrote, "Just got back from 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise....knew it was a good sign we were going to have a great time when Guy Fieri was cooking up the hamburgers poolside....oh yeah, the food was especially good!!!" And continued, "One of the best hamburgers I have ever had....at least the best poolside hamburger!!!!"

Guy got off the boat in Cabo and spent some time in the kitchen at Cabo Wabo on August 30, 2011.
