Fan questions, February 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them.

Rick of Boston wrote, "Hi There, I was wondering if there was a nice detailed scan of the 'Guy Ate Here' logo? I want to put one in my kitchen and think it would look cool."

Our answer: Nice! There isn't an online version of the Guy Ate Here logo, but there are plenty of photographs that you might be able to use in conjunction with some image software, such as Photoshop. Visit this Flickr page for a nice assortment of photographs.

You can also visit Guy's site, www.guyfieri.com, and take a screen shot of the original image from which the cardboard spray paint stencil was made. Hope that was helpful! And let us know how the project turns out. More on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

----------------------------------------

Sonya of Hope wrote, "Where can I find shirts like the ones Guy Fieri wears on Minute to Win it? All I can find are T-shirts, I'm looking for the ones with the collars, like the black one he wears with the red inside the collar."

And Jason of Houston wrote, "Where does Guy get those killer shirts he wears on M 2 Win it?"

Our answer: They are great questions! I've sent an email to Guy's stylist at NBC to get some more information. As soon as I hear back, I'll forward the information to you. More on Minute to Win It.

----------------------------------------

Maggie of New York wrote, "I have a dear friend who wants to suprise her husband for his 50th birthday with a Guy appearence or possibly a cooking event. He has a late summer birthday. Please tell me how, I can help her make this happen. They are the sweetest people and deserve a great event. Guide me to getting it done!"

And Rose of Evansville wrote, "In the town that I live in Evansville In. , the first full weak of Oct.. We have the second largest Festival in the U.S.A. It is hosted by the West Side Nut Club. 1 week of Food , Fun & Games. Come & Check it out , I believe you will have a great time."

Our answer: I think your best bet is to contact Guy Fieri's company directly. Mail to

Knuckle Sandwich
575 W College Avenue Suite 202
Santa Rosa CA 95401

As I'm sure you can guess, his travel schedule is very full. But who knows! Maybe he'll be in the area at the right time. Best of luck! And let us know how it goes. More on Guy Fieri Appearances.

----------------------------------------

Cathy of Shorewood wrote, "Does Guy really dislike eggs or is he allergic?"

Our answer: He really dislikes eggs. At least, he dislikes whole eggs as a component of a dish. He uses eggs as an ingredient in other dishes, so, no allergy. :) More on Guy Fieri Recipes.

----------------------------------------

Sherry of White Cloud, MI wrote, "Is there a place for me to send in a really great challange for the show? I learned to do this when I was a kid, and at 67 years old I am still able to do it, not as fast as I use to but I can do it. It is quite hard to do. Thanks."

Our answer: Yes. The preferred method is to send in a video of you (or your friends) explaining and completing the challenge. Visit www.nbc.com/minute-to-win-it/user-uploads to upload your video. More on Minute to Win It.

----------------------------------------

Dan of Sacramento wrote, "Is Guy opening a food truck in the Sacramento area?"

Our Answer: No, it isn't Guy's. However, there is a gourmet food truck in Sac called "Mini Burger," founded by Davin Vculek, who used to be Corporate Executive Chef at Johnny Garlic's and Tex Wasabi's.

You can find out more about the Mini Burger food truck on Yelp, visit www.miniburgertruck.com, follow on Twitter @MiniBurgerTruck or add as a friend at www.facebook.com/miniburgertruck.

Elizabeth Howes recalls Next Food Network Star, 2

Elizabeth Howes was one of the finalists in Season 2 of the Next Food Network Star, along with Guy Fieri. Our friend and fellow Fan of Guy Fieri, Brad at eatnlisten.com, has shared Elizabeth's guest blog post with us for a unique, insider's perspective on "The Guy I Knew Before He Took a Big Bite Out of Fame."

The Next Food Network Star, Season 2, was taped in New York City, December 2005, and premiered on March 19, 2006, now almost five years ago.

Elizabeth writes that upon arriving at Chelsea Market for the first time, "another black town car quickly pulled up behind me and the door swung open with force. Out came a platinum blonde, jewelry-clad, larger-than-life personality with his hands up in the air, mouth wide open and a laugh that was probably heard in Jersey. Who is this guy, I remember asking myself."

In the ensuing hours, I met all the other finalists, but was very drawn to the magnetic Guy Fieri. He was surprisingly personable, pure comedy and utterly eccentric – and unlike anyone else I’d ever met. In the same breath, I do have to admit that I was convinced he was not a threat. I had my eye on others as my primary competition, but certainly not “Guido”, as he called himself. He didn’t take things seriously, drank copious amounts of Jack Daniel’s, had an entourage of friends with names like “Dirty P”, “The Spaniard” and “Mustard” and found humor in almost every situation, appropriate or not. On the flip side, he had intense drive and, dare I say it, a very sweet heart. All traits I later learned, when combined, were his greatest asset.

Guy Fieri kept a blog during those days. On Day 4 of the competition, he wrote,
(Day off)
-Up at 11am....
-Out to dinner with Evette, Andy and Beth, to the Rocking Horse. Expensive and small portions, just what I hate but the food was good. Boy is it cold, feel like it might snow tomorrow.

And on Thursday 12/8, he continued,
-Everyone got called and Beth got taken out. Really sucks, at a time I should feel relieved, I feel sad - she is cool, sweet, focused, talented, wish the show could just be about all 8 of us and no cuts. I do NOT like this part, this emotional train wreck is like people slowing down to see a car wreck. Negative.
-Off to dinner. I'm gonna call Beth tonight - I hope she is ok.

Of course, Elizabeth Howes is fine. She is an accomplished chef, wellness enthusiast, food stylist and photographer. Elizabeth's private chef and boutique catering business, Saffron Lane, is located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

She stays in contact with Guy.
The last time I saw Guy was at a rather private and over-the-top birthday party thrown for him last year. There were VIP rooms, plenty of pulled pork and whiskey, and a collection of classic cars and motorcycles regally parked inside the venue. True to form, it was a sight to behold. He seemed happy, as he usually does, surrounded by the things he loves, the bright lights and people who love him.

When I was able to make my way through the crowd to say hello, I reminded him that he owed me a new pair of jeans – long story, but something only Guy could get away with – and gave him a big hug. “So great to see you, Beth Ann”, he whispered (long story about the odd nickname, too).

Morgan Fieri passed from this world, 2/19/11

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/times-standard/obituary.aspx?n=morgan-fieri&pid=148814143

"She was a beautiful redhead -- vivacious, the biggest-hearted person I've known," Fieri says. A practitioner of holistic health practices and an advocate of vegetarianism and organic foods, she contributed recipes to 'Guy Fieri Food.'

"I wasn't a huge vegetable person as a kid, but now I love 'em," he says. "Morgan was always talking about health, stuff I knew, but when she lectured about it, I listened. The piece about her in the book is the most cherished part of it, for me." -- Guy Fieri, on his sister Morgan Fieri

"Minute to Win It" charity episodes with stars

Minute to Win It has caught the eye of millions of viewers and play-at-home fans. It has also caught the eye of several celebrities who'll play on the show for various charities.

Mountain climber Aron Ralston, the inspiration for the Oscar-nominated film "127 Hours," will compete for the non-profit organization Wilderness Workshop on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 (8-10 p.m. ET).

Ralston, now a motivational speaker, was forced to amputate his right arm with a dull knife in order to free himself after his arm became trapped by a boulder during a canyoneering hike in Utah in May 2003.

The incident is documented in Ralston's 2004 autobiography "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" and is the subject of the 2010 film "127 Hours," starring James Franco, nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Actor." The Wilderness Workshop is the conservation watchdog of the the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest and other nearby federal public lands in the Rocky Mountains.

Los Angeles Lakers Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown, two-time NBA champions, team up to win money for their respective charities, the University of Arkansas Foundation Inc., and the Shannon Brown Foundation. Their episode airs on Wednesday, March 16 (8-10 p.m. ET).

The stars of "Jackass," Steve-O and Ryan Dunn, team up on to play for their respective charities, National Down Syndrome Congress and the Teammates for Kids Foundation, which is scheduled to air in May. On their way to the million-dollar prize, every amount earned at each round will go to their charities.

Fan questions, Mid-February 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them.

Jgreen of Bolingbrook wrote, "What kind of stove top does Guy use in his show?"

Our answer: "Guy uses Viking equipment at home, and we imagine the same on GBB." [answer courtesy of Brooks Group PR.]

Joanne of New Bedford wrote, "How do I go about promoting a local restaurant." Our answer: "Restaurant promotion is a complicated animal that can be rendered down to 'consistent compelling information directed to your core customer'." [answer courtesy of Brooks Group PR.]

Debra of West Hartford wrote, "Guy Fieri had a friend/partner on his show the other day for the Big Game. The turkey Burger, baked potato salad and a grape mojito were made on the show. I cannot get the recipe for the grape mojito. The website only brings up a kumquat mojito. Please help and send the recipe. Also, will Guy be anywhere near Connecticut promoting a book or any demonstrations? Thank you" Our answer: "Michael Perea was on that episode, Guy's Big Game. He is a mixologist and advises Guy on many of his cocktails for the show. He sent in with the correct recipe:
Sonoma County Mojito: Red, black, green grapes. Tablespoon sugar, 1 lime cut into 4 wedges, 6-8 mint leaves ( muddle all ingredients ) 2 oz silver rum, 1 oz white Sonoma County wine ( any variatal ) 4 oz soda water.
And you can view a YouTube video.

At this time, no trips to Connecticut have been formally released. However, Guy will be promoting a cookbook of his own recipes, "Guy Fieri Food," this Spring, so that might be a timeframe to watch out for.

We keep as much information as we can about his upcoming book signings and appearances at Upcoming Events."

J Malm of Eatonton, GA wrote, "how do we get the recipe wid rice cranberry bread and french toast from saras table creek cafe?"

Our answer: "The Food Network requests each restaurant on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives share one recipe. It's up to the restaurant to decide if they want to share more than one. Sara's Table Creek Cafe chose to share their recipe for brisket sandwiches here, http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/brisket-sandwich-recipe/index.html. For more, you should contact the restaurant directly. Here is their contact information:"

LaVada of Clinton wrote, "I am a Hospitality Services Management Major and I a hoping to be able to do my semester project on him, so if you can think of any other little known tidbits about him, that would be a big help!!"

Our answer: "Here are some frequently asked questions that we've compiled: http://guyfieri.blogspot.com/p/frequently-asked-questions-about-guy.html. I've heard Guy say many times that we chose HM as his UNLV major because he wanted to get into the restaurant biz. Yes, he loves to cook and be creative with recipe development, but that he also valued being trained in the arts and skills of business management as well. Moreover, I've heard him say many times that the most important thing to do in the restaurant biz is to take care of your guests. Not customers, guests. He's very service-oriented. He has endorsed word-of-mouth advertising and serving flavorful food to build business, rather than offering coupons and discounts.

"Guido the Hedgehog" Fieri

A few months ago, we shared a Guy Fieri caricature, sketched by Dave Curbis, a.k.a. BIOMEK, of Chicago, IL. He recently wrote in with his latest work:
Hi Dora
This is the artist known as BIOMEK...I have attached another Fieri inspired Caricature/cartoon hope you enjoy it and hope Guy likes it was well.

We love! And thanks so much for sharing it with us.

For more caricatures, drawings and cartoons by BIOMEK, visit www.c-z-caricature.com, http://crazyideas-curbis.blogspot.com and http://biomek.deviantart.com/gallery.

Guy Fieri gets teased about his hair A LOT. The blond spikes have become almost a trademark image for the host of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives; so much so that many Food Network viewers have recently noticed the Food Network logo transformed with a spiky top during commercials for Guy's shows.

About 2 years ago, FoodNetwork.com invited the public to upload photographs in a collection called "Do You Look Like Guy?" The page has since been taken down, but one of the funniest was a picture of a hedgehog, "liked" by the staff of the Food Network Kitchens.

Even the popular humor site, totallylookslike.icanhascheezburger.com thinks "Guy Fieri Totally Looks Like A Hedgehog." And who are we to disagree!

Fan questions, January 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them.

Myrna of Milwaukie, OR wrote, "I would REALLY like one of your measuring cups. The one I want is in ""layers"" I've seen it twice on Big Bites and really like it......ALOT!. Where can I get one? My favorite show is 3 D's Diners, Drive- Ins and Dives."

Our answer: "Here you go! http://catamountglass.com."

--------------------------------------------

Diane of Lincoln wrote, "How much did Alia and Chelsea win on Minute to Win it?"

Our answer: They won $50,000. You can watch the video on Hulu here, www.hulu.com.

--------------------------------------------

Blinda of Spring, TX wrote, "Could I get an interview on our Radio show for the second Thursday morning in February? Segment on grilling. 15 minutes spot on 'Our Livable Garden.' This is the longest running garden show in Houston, 18 years. www.livablegarden.com"

Our answer: "I'm forwarding your request to Guy's publicity team in New York. In the off chance you don't hear back in the next, say, 5 working days, feel free to contact them directly at:

The Brooks Group, attn. Rebecca Brooks
15 West 37th Street, 16th Fl
New York, New York 10018
212) 768-0860

Best of luck! And please do keep in touch with us about the interview! We'd love to be able to share the air date and/or podcast link with our readers."

--------------------------------------------

Ron of Port Townsend wrote, "What company built the Pretzel cart for Guy? Thank you!"

Our answer: "The original cart that Guy used as a teenager was built by his father and him. Recently, Guy and his company, Knuckle Sandwich, have donated pretzel carts both to Ferndale Elementary School and to Worth Our Weight, the Santa Rosa volunteer-run restaurant seen on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives just last week. Guy's manager told us, 'We build them ourselves at this point.' Pretty cool, huh!"

--------------------------------------------

Gina of Niceville wrote, "I was trying to find the recipe for the Big Bear Margarita with the chipotle infused simple sugar."

Our answer: "Ah! Yes. I know exactly the one. Oddly enough, it isn't listed on FoodNework.com (U.S.). However, it is listed on the Food Network's website in the U.K! Isn't that odd? http://www.foodnetwork.co.uk/recipes/the-barrer-at-ruth-lake.html." Guy's Holiday Spread
