Fan questions, November 2010

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [ZWorks, Brooks Agency, FN et al., if you can help shed light on any of these questions, please feel free to comment. ~D]

Barbara, Roanoke,VA wrote, "Why did the show have to end? It was great watching it with the family. My children miss it. They will so excited to know that it will be on 3 times in December. Guy has a great personality, a real people person. We just love him and the show. Please bring the show back. thanks"

Our answer: "Thanks for writing in. Minute to Win It is currently on hiatus. NBC is airing three holiday 'Minute to Win It' specials in December, Tuesdays on the 7th, 14th and 21st. The program is scheduled to return to Wednesday nights at 8pm/7c on NBC beginning January 5, 2011." More on Minute to Win It.

Paul DFW wrote, "I was just at Ricardo Avila's new location in Dallas [Avila's, Mama's Cookin' ~D]. I asked him about his telling DDD about Louies [Louie's, Family Favorites ~D] and he confrimed it. He said that the show needed a replacement for a restaurant that didn't work out (They started filming and realized it wasn't DDD quality) he said they wouldn't tell him the name of the restaurant. I however have figured it out with proof. Do you want the info, or to keep it quiet?"

Our answer: "Thanks for writing in. Avila's is a very popular DDD location! Many readers write in asking for its address. Please pass our regards on to Ricardo. You knew Guy was recently in DFW at a charity event with Mario Batali? Guy also had a meet & greet at Dillard's in nearby Hurst. Guy loves the area. And yes! Very curious about the replaced restaurant that didn't work out. What did you learn?"

Paul's reply: "Well in the back the second book about DDD, there is a listing of restaurants that DDD has visited. Last March I noticed the Massey's in Fort Worth was listed. I figured it would be on a future episode; however it never happened. The local reviews of the place are mixed. I've got to believe that this is the restaurant that they bailed out on.

"Ricardo said that they (the support staff at DDD) would not say who the restaurant was. I told him that when I got home I would look up the name of the restaurant, and would tell him on my next visit. After checking the book I notified you.

Love you site and check it a few times a week."

Our reply: "Fascinating! We love hearing some of the back stories from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We know of at least two locations where the show taped, and they've never aired. Not sure exactly why that is nor how it works. And thanks for reading!" More on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Jim, Mariposa Ca asked, "On the Thanksgiving Show, what does RRF on his ring mean?"

Our answer: "Thanks for writing in! We've received quite a few questions about Guy's jewelry. The letters stand for Ryder Ramsay Fieri when his son grows up, he'll get the family heirloom ring. On his other hand, Guy wears a ring with his younger son's initials."

MSL, Boston wrote in, "CANNOT find recipe for Anchovy Bucatini (Rao's bucatini w/anchovy & roasted peppers) as seen on Guys Big Bite Nov 2, 2010 episode.
Really want to try it"

Our answer, "It is difficult to find the exact recipes one wants from Food Network, isn't it! But I think this is the one you're looking for: Alex's Anchovy Buccatini recipe, from On Point Pepper Pork Party. Let us know if that was the one? And happy holidays!" More on Guy's Big Bite.

Her reply: "THANK YOU so much!! Can't believe how quickly you replied!!!!! I am so excited to try it. Happy Holidays!"

Susan, Lyons, Ks wrote, "I saw Guy carve a turkey breast on one of his shows, where he somehow got the whole breast half to come off at one time. How does he do it ??"

Our answer: "Thanks for writing in! I've tried to find a video of Guy carving a turkey, but have yet to come up with one. I'll keep searching and shoot you a note if I find one. :)

"In the meantime, I did find two videos of Alton Brown carving a turkey, one where he starts from the bottom of the turkey, slides along the rib bones and finishes out the top, and another video where he slices from the top to the bottom.

"Hope that helps for now!

Howard, New York wrote, "I have a great idea for a new show"

John, Carbondale CO wrote, "You need to stop by Smoke restruant in Basalt coloado and try out the BBQ and Mac and cheese with burnt ends. His food great. John "

Lisa, Cleveland wrote, "why doesnt Guy take this show across the pond to the U.K.? He has a great personality and can talk to just about anybody, and he could check out the pubs?????"

Our answer: "Hi Lisa, Nice! I can't speak for the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives producers, but I can only imagine that there are still more places to hit in The States before the show goes abroad. According to Hawaii Magazine, 'getting Fieri and the DD&D crew to even consider a Hawaii episode of the show wasn’t easy. The Oahu Visitors Bureau put in a fanatical amount of research, logistical planning and legwork just to get the show’s producers interested in filming here.'

"Fortunately they did film there and in Alaska too. But apparently it's harder to 'cross a pond' than one would think. :) Guy also has a standing invitation from some 8,000 readers of this blog each month from Canada, who all invite Guy and his show to their favorite eateries North of the border.

"Is there room on FoodTV for a Global Diners, Drive-ins and Dives?"

Lisa's reply: "Thanx dora.i just thought it would be a great show, guess i will have to wait...:( thankx"
