Fan questions, April 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [Some answers are edited for brevity. ~D]

Bob of Aberdeen wrote, "I was wondering if Guy will be doing a book tour. I heard the new book comes out May 3rd, but isn't he doing the road show around that time?"

Our answer: Yes, the Road Show is, essentially, a book tour. Premium tickets include a copy of his new cookbook, Guy Fieri Food. There'll be hit-n-miss book signings, coinciding with Guy's travel schedule, including New Jersey, New York and San Francisco. Click here to keep up to date on these and future stops.

-------------------------------------------

Victor of SPARTA wrote, "Hey Guy, I have an idea for a show. Do a tribute to the truckdrivers/waitress of this great country. My stepdad was a truck driver for over 20 yrs [and] my mother was a waitress for many yrs in local resturants. I watch your show daily.... I never miss a show."

Our answer: We'd suggest you send you show suggestion to the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives production company, Page Productions, www.pageprod.com. Best of luck!

-------------------------------------------

Ralph asked, "Where does Guy get his shirts?"

Our answer: Most of Guy's shirts are Cubavera, and he says he's been wearing Fender shirts lately too. See trivia questions.

We've also seen Remetee, Roar, Affliction, and reported recently Guy wearing J Steger jeans and a Junker shirt.

-------------------------------------------

Jay from Oklahoma City asked, "Where do I find a recipe for the spaghetti squash from a recent show? Really like the food you stumble on across the nation, great show; try to not ever miss!!"

Our answer: I think I found your spaghetti squash, from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, A Little Twisted, at

Marivelle wrote, "I was so star struck that I lost my speech as I dropped my sister off at the San Fransisco Airport, [when a] limo pulls right [with] my most favorite cook, chef, show host Guy Fieri! So I rushed out before he could take off to meet him, and being the sweetheart that he is, gave me a hand shake.... I just love love him. So my question is if you are ever in the bay I would love to hang out with you; thanks, you had made my day...."

Our answer: So glad you caught up and got an autograph, especially when you were having a tough day. Keep an eye out here, Guy Fieri Upcoming Events; we do our best to post when and where he'll be so you can catch the next live event! He'll be in Pebble Beach this weekend.

-------------------------------------------

Paul from Southgate Michigan wrote, "Love Guy's Big Bite. What are all the cooking oils (and other fluids) Guy has in squirt bottles next to the sink?"

Our answer: Glad to hear you like the show! It's my favorite too. :) The bottles contain different liquids, depending on what Guy is making on that day. Typically there will be soy sauce for Asian dishes, olive oil for cooking, extra virgin olive oil for finishing pastas or salads, several types of vinegars (red wine, rice wine, balsamic, etc.) and sometimes a spirit, such as tequila or 151-proof rum, for flaming meats or desserts. He uses the squirt bottles because they're easier to grip when your hands are wet or greasy than glass containers. "Then if it slips, big deal, it doesn't break," he says. "For people like me, it's a lot safer!"

You can see a video from Guy's kitchen here, www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsNkvTOblmE. It's a bit dated, taped in 2008.

Round-up of recent Guy Fieri news, April 2011

Here's a round-up of recent Guy Fieri news articles ....

The Asbury Park Press reviewed Guy Fieri's cooking demo at Brookdale College in Linden, NJ. "It's been a journey to get here but well worth it," Guy said.

"Before starting to cook his all-star steak sandwich," the article reads, "Fieri said he was recently in Arkansas, flew home to spend seven hours with his sons, and flew straight to New Jersey."

"'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives started in your state,' he said to loud applause, before getting the show going with his assistant 'Cuban Carl.'"

Alabama's Press Register reported on the recent Gulf Shores "Supper in the Sand," hosted by Guy Fieri.

"You can be the greatest chef in the world, you can have the best recipes, you can work with the most phenomenal people, but if you don’t have great product, then you don’t deliver the real deal," Fieri said. "This is where the great product comes from."

(Press-Register, Kate Mercer)

And in Sacramento, CA law-making news, the Capitol Weekly reports that,
...Guy Fieri is also looking for a change in state law to allow sponsorship from alcohol makers. Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, a San Francisco Democrat, has been working with him on legislation, which has yet to be introduced.

"Negotiators of the deal say the bill will allow Fieri to accept sponsorships but none of their products can be sold in Fieri’s restaurants.

After a 19 month closure, Guy Fieri’s Santa Rosa outpost of Tex Wasabi’s will reopen in May. According to Fieri spokesman Brett Hutchison, heavy reconstruction on the the “Rock and Roll Sushi-Barbecue” restaurant, which shuttered in September 2009, is nearing completion.

Fan questions, Mid-April 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month (and sometimes half-way thru!), I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [Some answers are edited for brevity. ~D]

Phil from Seattle asked, "When will season 5 be out on DVD?"

Our answer: We haven't heard a whisper about release dates for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives DVD's; we only find out about them once they're released.

Season 5 premiered in October of '08 and ran through March of '09. If Food Network continues to release DVD's at the same rate they have in the past, we expect to see Season 5 available for purchase in about 6 months. Keep an eye out on Food Network Store for Guy Fieri DVD's. Sorry we couldn't be more help than that!

--------------------------------------------------

Lauren of New York wrote, "Hii! My boyfriend is a hugggee fan of diners, drive-ins and dives and for his 30th bday I wanted to plan a road trip in the NY, NJ, CT area where we can hit up some of Guys taped or soon to be taped spots. ...would it be possible to get a list of Guys fav's in that area which would help me to schedule my trip route??"

Our answer: Ooo! Great birthday idea! We don't have the taping schedule for DDD that far out yet, sorry. :( But you've picked three really great states for a DDD road trip. Let's see.

Guy was just in New York in October 2010, around the Long Island, Queens area. More information about the New York state locations, click here.

The New Jersey Diner Tour is a fan favorite episode, where Guy visited 7 classic Jersey diners; following in those footsteps would be hard to go wrong. Guy visited New Jersey again in August 2010. Click here for all the New Jersey DDD's.

Guy hasn't taped in Connecticut in forever! Connecticut DDD's listed here.

--------------------------------------------------

Lee from Washington DC wrote, "There was a recipe for goulash using flank steak that aired recently. Can anyone help w/that? I know the woman cut it into diamond shapes (possibly to help tenderize it) & she marinated it overnight in a spice mixture that included sweet paprika & curry powder, but I don't remember the other ingredients. She cooked it at 450 but, again, can't remember how long. See why I need help?"

Our answer: I wondered if that wasn't from Kramarczuk Sausage Company in Minneapolis, MN? But that recipe uses pork, not flank steak. You have me stumped! Anyone want to take a shot at this one?

--------------------------------------------------

Joe Mast of Gravios Mills wrote, "How do I get Guy to come check out a place at Lake of the Ozarks,Its a little dive called Big Dicks Halfway Inn. Home of the minnow shot, yep we shoot minnows in shots. Got a burger called Dicks pounder, Its huge.Just a fun little place at the lake, I think it would be great for the show."

Our answer: Hilarious! Well, let's see. I think the first thing to find out is if the restaurant makes their food from scratch, never frozen or pre-packaged. All dishes featured must be made in-house using fresh ingredients. For example, gravies and sauces must be made from scratch.

If they make "real deal" food, then you should send your suggestion to www.pageprod.com or email DDDinfo@mac.com.

--------------------------------------------------

Renee' of Mishawaka wrote, "I believe Guy was at a BBQ place and I know it was late March when the episode aired. They were making a pizza with garlic butter, spinach two unique cheeses, more spinach, maybe onion and I thought some BBQ pork on top. I wanted to know where that was and what the unique cheese was?"

Our answer: I believe you're describing the spinach & goat cheese pizza at

Pizzeria Luigi - website
1137 25th St, San Diego, CA, 92102 - map
(619) 233-3309
www.pizzerialuigi.com

Here's the video, www.youtube.com; the spinach pizza starts right about the 4:40 mark.

--------------------------------------------------

Nancy from Windsor, ON Canada asked, "What goes on as far as performance on the Guy Fieri tour?"

Our answer: If this tour is similar to the Guy Fieri Road Show in 2009, expect a local chef to open the show with a cooking demonstration. Then Hayden Wood, flair bartender, comes out to demonstrate a few cocktails, flair bartending tricks, with audience participation, jokes, lots of music and clapping.

Then Guy comes out, throwing T-shirts and such into the audience, he'll take questions and answers, demonstrate new recipes from his upcoming book and serve them to the on-stage ticket holders. There's usually audience participation in the cooking segments, too.

Expect stories from the road (Guy's become a good story-teller!), jokes, music and dancing in the isles. Here's a video of "Story Time" at one of his shows in 2009, www.youtube.com.

--------------------------------------------------

Angelique asked, "What's the quickest, easiest brine for poultry or pork? Thank You!"

Our answer: Nice question! Here's a quick and easy suggestion from Guy: about a tablespoon of salt, a tablespoon of sugar (equal amounts), a teaspoon of peppercorns, fresh garlic (or onion would be fine), and water!

See www.youtube.com for a pork chop recipe with Guy Fieri and Matthew McConaughey. :) And more suggestions for a quick and easy breakfast and lunch here, McConaughey and Fieri on healthy cooking.

News on Johnny Garlic's, Cookbook sneak peek, more

Diablomag.com interviewed Guy Fieri recently, "On his new Johnny Garlic's in Dublin: So, it looks like the new Johnny Garlic's in Dublin has an estimated opening date of June 1 now. Fieri did say that all the staff has already been hired and trained for the new restaurant, and that he was really looking forward to the opening...."

"This is the next big step in our company," Guy said, "You'll see a little different style and decor, and you'll see a whole variety of new items on the menu. This is our newest location and first since 2008, so I think coming down to Dublin, we're putting everything into it—this is the next generation of Johnny Garlic's."

Guy also commented on the loss of his Lamborghini. Click here for the full article.

Ain't that the truth! @IrishTodd1 tweeted, "Guy Fieri Of the Food Network is here" with a grainy pic at the bar, http://plixi.com/p/92236987.

I've been away from the computer this past week, difficult to keep up with the news. So here's a photo recap of some Guy Fieri-related stories.

In March 2011, Ergo Chef and Guy Fieri announced an upcoming, limited edition line of Knuckle Sandwich knives, called "the Midnight Series." We think they look great!

Reactions from the RITZ Cracker semi-finalists

Ten top recipes have been chosen in the Guy Fieri / RITZ Cracker Recipe Challenge. I reached out to as many Semi-Finalists as I could (respecting those with restricted privacy settings) and asked about their thoughts on being in the Top Ten. Here are their responses!

By Linda
Hi Dora! Love the work you've done with the blog. This is my first recipe contest and was flabbergasted when was chosen as a Top Ten semi-finalist. My 13 y.o. daughter helped develop and prepare the "Italian Wedding Snackers" - this has been a truly empowering experience for us both. I think the BEST thing Guy has done with his career is encouraging people to cook with kids. Congratulations to the rest of the competitors and best of luck in all that you do.

By Nathan
I am very excited to be a semi-finalist in the Ritz recipe challenge. With so many great recipes entered into the contest, just making it into the semi-finals is quite the accomplishment, and I am just happy to be included with all the other great recipes. Good luck to all the other recipes vying for votes!

By Jeanette
I'm a huge fan of Guy Fieri and Ritz crackers and to be chosen as a semi-finalist was a dream come true! To be chosen out of the thousand was a real honor and a huge suprise! I would just like to thank Ritz and Guy Fieri for giving me this opportunity to represent them. I'm just so excited about this contest and I hope I make it to the top three. Also if you're taking turns on voting for the finalists please make sure you vote for my My baby bluegrass burgoo bites with sweet corn jicama chow-chow.

By Richard
I enter a lot of cooking contests; I usually have at least a dozen entries out to different contests at a time. The Ritz contest is a biggie: big promotion with a big name chef and big prizes. Ritz crackers are such a basic staple, you could almost go in any direction with your recipe. I got inspired by a batch of Millionaire Shortbreads that a co-worker brought in one day. I reacted very predictably; I jumped up and down and yelled. The cash prize would be cool, but I've never been to California. That would be a memorable trip. Wish me luck!

By Susan
I am so excited and really hope my Buffalo Shrimp Boats can sail to California!! "These shrimp boats are a little trouble but well worth the effort. The boats are made of cheese and ritz crackers and come out nice and crispy and will melt in your mouth. The filling is spicy and creamy and then topped off with a great crumb mixture."

By Gaylenn
Thanks for asking me to be included in your blog for Guy Fieri. Out of all the chef's who were competing in The Next Food Network's Star, Guy Fieri has been the top of my favorites. He is so down to earth, enthusiastic, and a true foodie! It's an honor to have my Hawaiian bread pudding recipe deemed as a semi-finalist in the RITZ recipe challenge. ... Everyone knows about the famous RITZ "Mock Apple Pie" recipe and I needed to come up with a dessert unique and tasty enough to rival it. ... If I can get enough votes to make it to the final phase of judging, I know my Hawaiian bread pudding has the potential to be the Grand Prize winner!

It’s a huge thrill to be chosen as a semi-finalist in the Ritz Recipe Challenge! Guy Fieri’s shout out for over-the-top recipes inspired me to create my Peppercorn-Crusted Steakhouse Sliders. Ritz Crackers have been a staple in my family since I was a young girl. And when I was in high school and college, my friends and I always kept a box or two in our cars as go-to road food! To be chosen as a semi-finalist in this contest brings my love affair with Ritz Crackers full circle. Congratulations to all of the finalists – some fantastic recipes! – but I sure hope it’s me flying out to CA! And thank you Ritz for giving me this opportunity in your contest!

If you facebook, please vote for your favorite Guy-inspired RITZ Cracker recipe every day through Thursday, April 7, 2011. "Like" www.facebook.com/ritzcrackers and visit http://apps.facebook.com/ritzgfieri to vote. The Top Three recipes move on to the final judging with Guy Fieri and a team of Kraft Foods appointed judges. Best of luck to one and all!
