Guy's Big Bite - Guy's Gridiron Grub - Aired: 1/31/10

Gary is topping hot dogs with his Green Tomato Chutney, and Guy is roasting giant Turkey Legs in Maple-Bourbon Brine. Cheesy jumbo pretzels topped with everything bagels are and bourbon-spiked Tailgate Sweet Tea are two more menu all-stars.

In 2007 Ergo Chef met Guy Fieri at a gourmet food show. Guy used the cutlery on stage during his demo and was given a set to take home. After a year of wear and tear in his kitchen he was hooked on the quality and design of Ergo Chef’s Pro-Series product. Before we knew it we were teaming up with Guy Fieri to develop his own collection. We sketched a range of designs lookin’ for the select few that really rocked technically and aesthetically! We nailed it with these knives. As a chef, restaurant owner, and TV personality, Guy has high expectations for his equipment and these knives meet and exceed all of them.

Guy Fieri makes a guest appearance on The Price Is Right

The Price Is Right first aired in 1956 with host Bill Cullen. The show gained the most popular momentum when hosted by the imitable Bob Barker from 1972 to 2007. The show lives on now in the care of comedian and host Drew Carey.

Guy Fieri will make a brief appearance on CBS's Emmy Award-winning show, The Price Is Right, February 3, 2010 in support of his second book, More Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Air times are 11:00 AM-12:00 Noon, ET; 10:00-11:00 AM, PT on CBS.

More Diners, Drive-ins and Dives is a #1 New York Times Bestseller and is listed as a #7 Washington Post Bestseller. Publishers Weekly wrote, “rounded out with plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes and local color, this tour of off-the-beaten-path establishments has enough regional entries to keep culinary road-trippers busy (and full) for many, many miles.”

And just in case you're ever on a game show and need to know, the book retails for $19.99. :)

Guy Fieri on vacation, I clean up my blogs

For those who were interested in following the story, The Food Network and HGTV are back on the air with Cablevision. Click here for FN's announcement. I have yet to find the details of their agreement; more on this as I come across it.

Guy Fieri in the Mags
Guy Fieri is on the cover of Smoke Magazine - whether the issue is current or from Fall 2009, it is unclear. The magazine isn't sold in any markets I frequent.

"To me, cigars are flavor. Cigars have a nice bold flavor to them," Guy says, and recalls his first introduction to cigars in college, when a girlfriend's father gave him a Macanudo from his humidor.

And Personal Branding Magazine has an interview with Guy Fieri on how he built his personal brand as a television personality on the Food Network.

"My brand is now just who I am."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

While Guy Fieri takes a well-earned vacation in Mexico this week, (burying puffer fish?) I'm doing some house cleaning and catch-up in this blog, the DinersDrive-insAndDives blog and associated Triple D map. Here's what I'm working on.

Guy's Big Bite Episodes
It was Guy's Big Bite that first drew my attention and piqued my curiosity about the man behind the food. Here and there, I've highlighted a few recipes from GBB, but recently have taken on the task of researching each one.

As I've done so, I've continued to find FoodNetwork's website unwieldy and awkward. But with the help of their online chat service professionals, I have the bulk of the research done and am creating episode pages with pictures and videos within this blog.

Click on Episode GBB to see the pages I've created so far.

When they're all done, I'll attempt to inter-link similar recipes, i.e. by kind of protein, ethnicity of dish, type of dish (egg rolls, pasta, ...) etc. Really, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Episode Blog
I've been pleased with how this episode guide has turned out - and it is a reasonably popular blog, averaging 1000 hits each day.

At the time of this writing, I still have 35 episodes where the videos need to be updated from 425-wide to 480-wide. Where possible, I'll add Facebook and Twitter links for the restaurants and include owners' names.

Triple D Map
I'm working on getting screen shots from each location's Triple D segment uploaded on the map. This morning I got through the 2008 episodes. Really, it isn't taking as long as I thought it would.

And now, each location is back-linked to its episode page. Click here to see all the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives restaurants that Guy Fieri has visited. Just use the Zoom feature to zero in on a particular state, county or city.

Oh! And one more thing: I now have a link to a list of all the restaurants Guy Fieri visited for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, sorted by state alphabetically or by zip code. Click here to check it out.

Fan Questions
I recently wrote in to Guy Fieri's publicists to have a few fan questions answered. It will take a bit more time to get those results, so watch for an upcoming post about them in a few days.

Guy Fieri is looking for tasty meals in Cincinnati

*Update*
Guy Fieri did an interview with Cincinnati's Kiss107 on February 5, 2010. Click here to listen to the full 25-minute interview. See more information below.

Cincinnati.com is looking for a few great places to eat in Cincinnati, Ohio. Guy Fieri and the film crew for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives is scheduled to hit "The Queen City," sometime in March 2010.

In 1835 Cincinnati was the world's major pork processing center. Known at the time as "Porkopolis," herds of pigs traveled the streets. The nickname stuck until 1865 when Chicago took the lead in pork production. Let's hope that Guy Fieri, a self-proclaimed Pal O' Pork, finds some hog heaven there.

If you know of any likely Triple D joints in the Cincy area, send an email to DDDinfo@mac.com or click here to chime in with your suggestions.

This will be DDD's first visit to Cincinnati; however the show has featured restaurants in northern Ohio and a few locations in nearby Kentucky and West Virginia - click here to view all Triple D locations in and around Ohio.

As I look at a national view of the Triple D map, I see a great void in the Rocky Mountain region and the plains states. Readers in Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming and Colorado, you can send a note to DDDinfo@mac.com with your local suggestions too. Sturgis, South Dakota? Let's get Guy out to the Black Hills in August. Talk about Hog Heaven! Haha.

Dr. M’s TOP TEN reasons that visiting Triple Ds is a great hobby!

USA Today recently ran a story about "road warriors," business people who travel extensively for work. The thrust of the article was about how seasoned travelers spend what off-time they have while away from home, and it included a mention that many business travelers seek out the restaurants where Guy Fieri has been for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
Frequent business traveler David Condon is ecstatic about the "best eggs Benedict" at the Gaffey Street Diner in San Pedro, Calif., and the "garbage plate" at Frank's Diner in Kenosha, Wis.
[both from Breakfast (DV0104)]
The garbage plate — "hash browns, eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage and God knows what else" accompanied by homemade toast — "is a totally decadent experience," says Condon, of West Haven, Conn....

Condon, who travels on business about 200 days a year, says his "decadent pleasure" is seeking the greasy-spoon restaurants Guy Fieri visits on his popular Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
Moreover, I had to chuckle at Gadling.com, who only recently figured out there are iPhone apps for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Dr. M (a.k.a Dr. Robert McCleland) is one of these "road warriors," traveling some 300,000 miles on United in the last couple of years. He wrote to me, "thinking about it on the airplane today, I came up with my top 10 reasons that I LOVE this hobby. ... I've now been to 66 places that Guy has featured."

And Dr. M is generously helping me to collect the Guy Ate Here tags, stenciled and spray-painted somewhere on a wall or door in the more recently-filmed DDD locations.

He's allowed me to post his reasons for indulging in this travel decadent pleasure with full editing rights. However, nothing I could conjure with words and imagination would surpass his own. And they are:
---------------------------------------------------

Dr. M’s TOP TEN reasons that visiting Triple Ds is a great hobby!

1. I now eat far better when I'm on the road.
Last night I had fresh hummus, grilled lamb and salad (Prince Lebanese Grill). The night before I had duck in orange sauce over fresh spinach (Chef Point Cafe). Two years ago I would have had McDonald's one night and Burger King the next.

2. I have actually lost weight doing this!
I thought I had gained 5 pounds, but when I got on the scale recently I found that I have lost about 5.

3. I get to support local places that are doing it right.
These are not big chains, but are local joints with hard working people that care about their customers and their product... and it shows.

4. I get to meet some very thankful owners.
The day before the LA Roadshow I went to Mambo’s and I met Raul, Sr. I told him that I was going to meet Guy the following evening. Raul said, "Please tell Guy how thankful I am for all he has done for me." He is not alone. I have often heard how thankful people are to have become part of the Triple D family.

5. I learn about food and cooking.
As a result of watching Triple D I began some chef lessons, I use fresh ingredients for the first time, I cook with my daughter, and I purchased some really cool knives with red flames on the handles!

6. It gets me off the couch at home.
I watch less TV as a result of this TV show! While that sounds oxymoronic, it's true. Now I cook more, I’m reading and studying about food, I go to farmer's markets, etc. I have taken some chef lessons, and I’m cooking once in awhile. Most of all I enjoy cooking with others.

7. When I'm on the road, the local Triple D gives me a place to meet people.
This week I was in Dallas. An old friend wanted to get together so I said, “I want to check out this great restaurant I heard about… Over the meal he asks how I heard about the place and I’m thinking ‘don’t get me started.’ My friends or business associates then start checking out the other Triple Ds in their respective areas. Then I get emails from them telling me about joints I need to visit.

8. The price is right.
My meals at Triple D establishments average about $10. Even when I’m generous with the wait staff, these places are easy on the travel expense budget.

9. The extra kindness shown by the proprietors.
I introduce myself to the owners when possible. Inevitably they ask about other places I have visited, they tell stories about filming their episode, and they talk about how much their business has increased (at least 30%!). Many times, before I leave, a complimentary dessert shows up at my table or some other nicety occurs. It is never expected, but these people are just so nice, they can’t help themselves.

10. The incredible food!
We’re talking good eats. Ultimately, it’s all about the food. So far only 2 places have disappointed. There are 2 others that I considered average. That means over 90% of the Triple Ds I have been to have had really good food (and many times I have said, “This might be the best thing I have ever tasted!”). What other road warriors have that kind of good meal percentage?!

I would have never experienced the halibut fish tacos at Bluewater Grill, the pork ribs at Gorilla BBQ, or the pozole soup at Avila's. Words just can’t express how good these dishes are… the gingerbread waffles at the Fly Trap, the butterfly shrimp at Joey K’s, the Bacon Burger at Hodad’s, the Swedish delights at Tre Kronor… are you kidding me?!

We are talking outstanding food eaten in funky joints while meeting some great people all over our country. It’s a great hobby, and I highly recommend it!

Fans give back and connect with Guy Fieri

It's been said that Guy Fieri is perhaps the most accessible of all Food Network stars, hosts and chefs; I don't know enough about the other Food Network personalities to say. But I do know that fans are eager to meet him, and they frequently offer a token gift of appreciation and thanks for his shows, lifestyle and/or charitable works.

Carlos Lovato, of Sinners-Inc, presented Guy Fieri with a 12:1 piston ring at a book signing in June, 2009, during the Great American Food & Music Fest. Guy was so taken with the ring, that he's been seen wearing it at almost every public appearance, and on the majority of the shows he's taped and produced since that time.

In preparation for the Guy Fieri Road Show, and in appreciation for the invaluable national exposure of their jewelry, Sinners-Inc made exclusive custom piston rings with the Kulinary Gangsta logo for Guy Fieri and his "Kulinary Krew," right-hand man Kleetus and left-hand man Dirty.

Four rings were produced; one of those four is as yet unspoken for. Carlos is considering donating the fourth ring (an auction, perhaps?) towards the Friends Raising Funds organization, to support their efforts.

A fifth ring has been ordered for Rich Bacchi, a.k.a. Gorilla, from Gorilla BBQ (BBQ & More DV0510) in Pacifica, CA, who traveled with Guy Fieri on the Road Show. [I wonder what size ring a gorilla wears? :) ~D]

Carlos and his business partner Victor Martino hung out with the Krew and Guy's family in San Jose at the Road Show, December 2009. Carlos said, "it was quite the experience, and Guy is an incredible host."

Guy Fieri has long been a fan of baseball (even though we hear more about football and the Oakland Raiders). In Louisville, KY, Guy Fieri was presented with a Louisville Slugger.

Louisville Slugger's very own Danny Luckett and his wife Pattee, giving Guy Fieri a personalized bat when he was in town, December 2009.

At a recent Cowboy Mouth concert in San Francisco, CA, welcomingspirit.blogspot.com accidentally stumbled into Guy Fieri and his krew on a night out on the town. She writes, "Guy Fieri got up on stage and played the drums with Fred [LeBlanc]. Guy also danced with the crowd, surrounded by guys in black jackets with "Kulinary Gangsta" written on the back. Awesome. Seriously."

And as reported before, Foodies Like Us gave back by organizing a Triple D event in Mesa, AZ. Here is a short video with pictures and comments from those who were there.

Guy's Big Bite - Blondes Have More Fun - Aired 1/10/10

Guy Fieri invites buddy and hair style twin Anne Burrell over for an afternoon of culinary mayhem. Pizza dough flies as Guy makes Prosciutto and Eggplant calzones, while Anne grills up white pizzas with mushrooms and pancetta. Sautéed Utica Greens with sliced meats and tangy vinegar makes a side as bold as their hairdos!

Guy Fieri recipes for post-season football

It's Wild-Card Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10, 2010, and I thought that getting some great Guy Fieri football recipes out there would be a good idea. Of course, these will work well for the divisional and championship rounds too. Heck, even Superbowl.

These videos were shot for Superbowl 2009, to accompany a football-themed party spread in Food Network magazine. But they've just been uploaded to YouTube. Ok, so they were uploaded a month ago. But they're here now, so let's just move forward with it.

French Onion Dip - recipe on FoodNetwork.com
Ingredients
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 tablespoon butter
2 Vidalia onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings (about 4 cups)
2 large shallots, sliced into 1/8-inch rings (about 1/2 cup)
2 cups sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon Worcestershire
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt

Directions
In a large saute pan over medium high heat, add oil and butter. When butter is melted, add onions and saute stirring occasionally until golden brown and caramelized, about 35 minutes. Add shallots and saute for 15 minutes more until onions and shallots are dark brown. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 to 6 minutes, then chop into 1/4-inch pieces. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, celery salt, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Fold in onion mixture. Chill at least 1 hour or overnight, prior to serving.

Cook's Note: Dip can be pureed until creamy. If too thick, add milk to get desired consistency.

Guy Fieri - on fried Oreos and fried pizza

On Tuesday, January 5, 2010, Guy Fieri made a guest appearance on The Jay Leno Show during Kim Kardashian's Earn Your Plug segment.

Today, I've been inundated with requests for Guy Fieri's recipes for Fried Oreos and Fried Pizza. Readers, there is no recipe, per se, but here's how it all went down on Leno.

Fried Oreos - according to me, as directed by Guy Fieri
Ingredients
Oreos (could be double stuff, could be original)
Milk
Flour
Tempura batter (available in most grocery stores; check the Asian section)
Canola oil, for frying

Directions
Preheat oil to 350 degrees F
1. Dip those Oreos deep in milk. Get them completely covered.
2. Dredge the Oreos in flour, coating both sides.
3. Dip the Oreos in prepared tempura batter
4. CAREFULLY drop the Oreos in oil; fry until golden brown and delicious.
5. Serve with vanilla ice cream and chocolate topping (if you can get the chocolate topping out of the squeeze bottle. haha.)
6. According to KK, enjoy once a year.

Deep Fried Pizza - according to me, as directed by Guy Fieri
Ingredients
Pizza skin (that would be pizza dough to the rest of us; commonly found in the frozen foods section of your grocery store)
Pizza sauce
Mozzarella cheese (or pizza cheese mix, check the deli section of your store)
Pepperoni
Other toppings as desired
Water
Canola oil, for frying

Directions
Preheat oil to 350 degrees F
1. Thaw and stretch out the pizza skin
2. Cut each skin in half
3. Slather pizza sauce on one half of each piece of pizza dough
4. Top with cheese, pepperoni and desired toppings
5. With your finger, apply water around the edges of the pizza dough
6. Fold piece in half, creating a calzone-like pizza pocket; pinch the edges together tightly.
7. CAREFULLY drop pizza in oil and fry 5 to 10 minutes

For a limited time, view Guy Fieri, Jay Leno and Kim Kardashian's segment on www.TheJayLenoShow.com or at Hulu, if that platform works better for you.

A brief aside: From @JeffBryanDavis, Had dinner with Guy Fieri last night at a fancy Japanese restaurant. I wish I had something funny to add to that. Which, in itself, is funny.

Guy Fieri to cook on The Jay Leno Show

Guy Fieri will be on The Jay Leno Show (website) tonight, Tuesday, January 5, 2010. According to Guy's press agent, "Want to know how to deep fry Oreos, pizza or cheesecake? Tonight @ChefGuyFieri will teach Kim Kardashian on Leno!"

I'm sure Guy will get a shout out for his new prime time game show on NBC (the same network as the Jay Leno Show), Perfect 10. (Er, or is that Minute To Win It - tweet) Kim Kardashian is the special guest and the featured segment is with Jillian Michaels.

The last time Guy Fieri was on The Jay Leno Show was for the Ten @ Ten: Guy Fieri, on November 11, 2009. Two of my favorite questions?

Jay: Choose A, B or C. Johnny Garlic's is...
A) The name of one of your restaurants
B) A dish you created
C) The worst name ever for a men's cologne

Guy: I wish it was C, because that would be money. But it's actually A, the name of my restaurant.

...

Jay: Choose A, B or C. number ten. The Awesome Pretzel is...
A) A three-wheel bicycle cart your dad built for you so you could sell pretzels
B) A new show by Cirque du Soleil
C) $200 at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch brothel

Guy: [laughing] I don't even want to know how C was dreamed up. But it was actually A, the name of my pretzel business when I was a kid. The Awesome Pretzel.

Guy Fieri also made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in March 2009, where he demonstrated Pork En Fuego.

In other news:

On New Year's Eve, Santa Rosa's newspaper, the Press Democrat, caught up with Guy Fieri and his family, celebrating Ryder's (Guy's son's) 4th birthday.

When asked about Perfect 10, Guy said that he's "been sitting on this for about two and a half months." He went on to say a very cool set is being built in a 350-seat studio in Los Angeles. Shooting for the show starts mid-January, which doesn't yet have a premiere date.

The article also mentioned that Guy Fieri is preparing to visit the White House and the Obamas to promote cooking with kids.

It has been a long-time goal of Guy's to make a national Cook With Your Kids Day. The first step was for California to recognize the day on a state level. In March of 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger teamed up with Guy Fieri on the steps of The State Capitol in Sacramento, California, for Ag Day.

Click here for a video with Guy Fieri from Ag Day 2008, and click here for a Guy Fieri recipe, Chicken Avocado Egg Rolls, featuring California-grown wild rice.

In May 2009, Guy Fieri teamed up again with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver passing a resolution that the second Saturday in May be proclaimed "Cook With Your Kids Day" in California. Now it's straight to the top. Guy Fieri, best of luck!

Elsewhere:

The organizers of an unprecedented United Way fundraiser in Knoxville, TN, raised 11.8 million dollars. John F. Lansing , president of Knoxville-based Scripps Networks who served as chairman for the 2009 United Way of Greater Knoxville Campaign wrote, "It was a truly historic moment during the opening days of the campaign when all of the local media came together to create the first-ever United Way telethon/radiothon hosted graciously by WNOX's Hallerin Hill and Food Network's Guy Fieri." The telethon aired in Knoxville on September 21, 2009.
