Tomorrow, Guy Fieri is on your television, all day long

Well, almost all day long. You know you've made it in the television entertainment industry when you have four different programs all airing on the same day, plus an hour-long program about your life - a Fest of Fieri, if you will, on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

All four of Guy Fieri's current in-production television shows will air at some time tomorrow and on every Sunday for the next few weeks, either on the Food Network or on NBC. And tonight, March 13th at 8 ET, with a follow-up broadcast on Sunday the 14th, the Food Network presents an encore of Chefography: Guy Fieri.

Guy's Big Bite first aired on June 25, 2006. The successful inaugural six-episode series was renewed and is currently in its 7th season, with an 8th season on the way. It is my favorite of his shows.

Undoubtedly, this is the show that catapulted Guy Fieri into fame and pop culture. It premiered in November 2006, recently aired its 100th episode and has no signs of slowing down. In addition to two best-selling books for Guy Fieri, Triple D has inspired fans to create maps, guides, websites, photo journals, Facebook pages, Twitter lists, iPhone apps and road trips. It has inspired people to go into the restaurant business! Diners, Drive-ins and Dives isn't just a television entertainment viewing choice, it's a slice of America.

The big gamble, the new show, this is Guy Fieri's first significant foray outside of the Scripps Network family and into network television. After having followed Guy for just over a year, I've come to find that his "brand," such as it is, is more than food or being a 'food dude' - it's a lifestyle, which includes food, yes, but also music, cars, cigars, sports, jokes, travel, friends, family, partying .... I'm thinking, of any non-food-related show Guy would do, this one is the MOST suited him and to what his lifestyle represents. It'll be fly.

Now in its 3rd season, Ultimate Recipe Showdown first aired in February of 2008, a competition between home cooks for the best recipe in several genres. The show's then-partnership with TGI Friday's spawned commercials featuring Guy Fieri, and heavy rotation introduced his voice and face to an audience outside of the Food Network.

Guy, your hard work is paying off. On behalf of your friends and fans, may I say congratulations on this red letter day. It's an epic achievement.

Guy Fieri on The Tonight Show for Minute to Win It

Guy Fieri is scheduled to be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (website) tomorrow, Wednesday March 10, 2010 at 11:34/10:34p to promote his new game show, Minute to Win It on NBC. Kristen Stewart and Ryan Bingham are also slated to be on the show.

Thursday, March 12, 2010 on Today, also Donald Trump and Amy Ryan, and on Friday, March 13, 2010, Guy Fieri is scheduled to be on Regis and Kelly, 9am/8c on NBC. Ted Dansen and Anderson Cooper are also guests.


Yesterday, Guy Fieri stopped by the KCRA studios (NBC affiliate in Sacramento, CA) to talk about Crazy Challenges Await on 'Minute to Win It.' (video)

One never knows if a television show is going to "make it" or not. Guy Fieri's live performances are very well received by his audiences, yet his in-studio live show, Guy Off the Hook, failed to take off.

One can only conjecture how Minute to Win It will do; it premieres this weekend, Sunday March 14, 2010 at 7/6c, with at least an eight-episode initial run. But regardless of how the show fares on NBC, the games we've heard about so far are taking off like wildfire. Even if people are unsure of how successful the show will be, the games are a hit.

Are there negative comments on Twitter and Facebook? Sure. But my point is that the games look fun, admitted even by detractors. I think folks are going to tune in to see what it's all about.

Recently, NBC sent cameras out to tape people on the street, trying out the new games. That's not acting; they're having fun.



And from YouTube, this just posted: Saw this really quickly on a commercial for the upcoming game show "Minute to Win it". Contestants have to get a ping pong ball out of the box without touching it. Only 'dancing' it out. Results are hilarious.



Many writers are being sent press kits, swag boxes from NBC with props from the games. Of course, many writers aren't (self included; they know I'll write about the show regardless ... ), but here's what they look like.

Excitement builds for Ultimate Recipe Showdown, season 3

With so much energy being thrown at Guy Fieri's new game show, Minute to Win It, on NBC, his 3rd season of Ultimate Recipe Showdown has almost been lost on the media. But fans of the Food Network know what's what and are talking up the new season with great interest. Visit the show's index page, full of information about this season's contestants and episodes.


This third season was taped in front of a live audience in late September 2009. The public was invited to request tickets for a morning or afternoon taping of the show, in Food Network's large Studio A, located above Chelsea Market in New York, NY.



Ultimate Recipe Showdown first debuted in February of 2008. The first season was co-hosted by Marc Summers (Double Dare, Unwrapped) and Guy Fieri.


Guy Fieri took the second season on his own; it premiered in February of 2009.

Several of this year's contestants are returning from last year. For example, Harold Cohen of Hollywood, FL won the 2009 burger competition with his Pimento Cheese Burger. Click here to view his brilliant performance from that episode of Ultimate Recipe Showdown, season 2.

And the charming Miss Emily Hobbs, of Ozark, MO, almost got it last year, but just missed out on the big win. Those of us who watched recall how much Guy was salivating over that Pumpernickel Pastrami Panini with Rosemary-Ale Jus. Girl, you were singin' his tune. She'll be back too.

Lawrence Kansas is looking for a few diners, drive-ins and dives

Some time ago, the Lawrence Journal was contacted by Page Productions, the company that produces Diners, Drive-ins and Dives for the Food Network, asking for likely places for Guy Fieri to visit in the Lawrence, Kansas area.

The first round of suggestions didn't make the cut, so they're asking for fans to suggest more. According the the LJ's article, here are some attributes and requirements of a restaurant to be chosen for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

First, it doesn't have to be a diner, a drive-in nor a dive, specifically. That's just an alliterative name for the show; not a limiting description of the featured restaurants.

The restaurant has to have been open at least a year.

The restaurant has to make 90 percent of its food from scratch.

The restaurant can't have had major national media exposure already.

A meal at the restaurant can't cost more than $15.

It can't be too fancy, obviously, because the show is all about diners, drive-ins and dives.

It can't be a chain.

*Update* According to Hawaiian Magazine,
Restaurants must not have been featured on Food Network within the previous six to seven years.

All dishes featured must be made in-house using fresh (never frozen) ingredients. Gravies and sauces must be made from scratch.

Restaurateurs must be willing to disclose recipes of all featured dishes. If recipes involve “secret ingredients,” a majority of these must be revealed.

All restaurant staff appearing on camera must be “interesting and dynamic” and willing to remain at the location for the complete duration of DD&D filming.

Moreover, according to a recent article written by John Kiesewetter in Cincinnati, Ohio:

The food has to be out of this world - truly homemade, often with a spin or twist that takes a basic dish to a new level.

The people and location must be authentic, too.

"We like places with a history, places that are a real part of the community, and especially places run by folks who are true characters - passionate about what they do and eager to share stories," said Allison Page, Food Network vice president for programming.

To make shooting the show cost effective, the production company needs to find six or seven restaurants within a reasonable distance of each other. They'll schedule the shoot over four days. In some cities, "Triple D" researchers have checked out 80 eateries to find seven places to feature.

Questions from fans of Guy Fieri

I get quite a few emails and questions from fans in the comments sections of this blog. I collected a few questions and sent them off to Guy Fieri's publicists in New York to get a few answers. Here's what I found out!

Q: Guy's Big Bite cutting board surface - The set for GBB season 7 has a beautiful HUGE cutting board, flush with the counter. I've been asked from what material it is made. Wood, we know. But what kind of wood?
A: Cross cut walnut, produced by the Vermont Butcher Block (website).

Q: Guy's Big Bite furniture - A reader just wrote in today asking about the brand of furniture in the TV area of Guys' Big Bite?
A: There is a lot of furniture, but the chairs and ottomans are Aemes (Knoll).

Q: Guy's Holiday shirt - A grey shirt with a Santa on the back. Season 6 | Episode: 10 (Airdate: 12/7/08) Guy's Holiday Spread. Don't suppose that was wardrobe's offering? Whatever info you have would be great.
A: No idea, sorry

Q: Chefography: Guy Fieri, Guy's Big Bite and Next Food Network Star Season 2 - People are looking for these on YouTube; any movement or plans to release these on DVD?
A Haven't a clue.

Q: Tex Wasabi's Pork Slider recipe - I hear they're delicious. Care to share the recipes?
A: Unfortunately this is proprietary information so we can't share the recipe at this time.

Q: What is the current status of the Guy Fieri Foundation status? We've heard bits and pieces, but it's been a while since we had an update.
A: The GF Foundation is still in development stages. We'll keep you updated as it progresses.

Q: Chef Coats from the road show - They're a hit. Who made them?
A:We are looking at creating a retail version. In development right now. [Since asking this question, I've found that the chef coats were made by ChefWorks. ~D]

And just last night, I had a Twitter conversation with a fan about the red Camaro, as seen on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It appears that the car used in the Alaska episodes is not the same as the car used in the continental United States episodes.

This, of course, makes perfect sense. It would be unreasonably costly to trailer a car all the way up to Alaska. But I've got to give credit to a viewer who noticed the small differences.


You'll see in the picture above, the Camaro used in Oklahoma (upper right) is painted black on the back and the antenna is on the rear left-hand side. Whereas the Camaro used at the Silver Gulch in Alaska (left and lower right) is painted red on the back panel, with the antenna on the front right-hand side. :)
