Batali - Fieri smack talk about upcoming Asphalt Chef competition

Asphalt Chef Grilling Competition, November in Texas

Superstar celebrity chef Mario Batali is teaming up with Speedway Children's Charities-Texas Chapter to present the Asphalt Chef cooking competition and his Ultimate Tailgate Party during November's AAA Texas 500 NASCAR triple-header weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

On Saturday, November 6, 2010, 6-9:00 p.m. CT - The Asphalt Chef will be the centerpiece of the two-day charity drive, featuring celebrity chefs paired with NASCAR guests in a cooking competition, poolside at Texas Motor Speedway's Lone Star Tower clubhouse.

Guy Fieri will work with 2004 Sprint Cup Series champ Kurt Busch, "Iron Chef" champion and Fort Worth resident Tim Love will be paired with Foreigner's lead singer Kelly Hansen and Mario Batali will partner with four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.

ABC-TV/ESPN NASCAR pit reporter Dave Burns, a self-admitted "foodie," will serve as the emcee of the event, which benefits the Speedway Children's Charities and the Mario Batali Foundation.

The format is modeled after the popular "Iron Chef" television show -- where the world's premier chefs battle each other and the clock to earn the ultimate bragging rights -- but this event possesses a few wrinkles, such as the team concept.

A secret ingredient will be unveiled just prior to the competition and the teams will have five minutes to conceptualize a recipe. They will then go head to head and will have 20 minutes to produce a dish with the secret ingredient. The dishes will be presented to a special judging panel, graded in various categories, and the winning team will receive an oversized, orange Mario Batali peppermill trophy and $5,000 to be designated to their favorite charity.

Ticket holders will enjoy complimentary wine, beer and spirits as well as food, including a special dish from each of the celebrity chefs, as well as live and silent auctions showcasing items and packages from the chefs, drivers and sponsors of the event. Kelly Hansen will be joined by band member and bassist Jeff Pilson to perform a few acoustic versions of their songs that evening.

On Sunday, November 7, 2010, 10 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Batali will host ario Batali's Ultimate Tailgate Party, poolside at the clubhouse, featuring complimentary food from various major restaurants in the Metroplex as well as wine, beer and spirits. Batali, Guy Fieri and Tim Love also will conduct cooking demonstrations followed by a Q&A session with the guests.

A combination ticket is available for both Asphalt Chef and Mario Batali's Ultimate Tailgate Party at $350. Individual tickets are $250 for Asphalt Chef and $150 for the Mario Batali's Ultimate Tailgate Party. Capacity is limited for both events. The events benefit Speedway Children's Charities and the Mario Batali Foundation and are tax deductible.

For tickets or additional information, please contact Speedway Children's Charities at (817) 215-8421 or visit www.scctexas.org.

Guy Fieri to cook with Petty and Wood

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 is a 350-kilometer (220 mi) NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event held annually at Infineon Raceway (website) at Sears Point in Sonoma, California, held over Father's Day Weekend, June 18-20, 2010.

A featured bit of TNT's "Countdown to Green" pre-race coverage is the "Ponytail Express," a NASCAR road trip with Kyle Petty and Rutledge Wood. This week, Petty and Wood are cooking with Guy Fieri at his restaurant, Johnny Garlic’s in Santa Rosa.

Click here to view last and this years' "Ponytail Express" videos.

TNT televises the race on Sunday, June 20, live from Infineon Raceway. Pre-race coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. Pacific, and the Toyota/Save Mart 350 begins at 3 p.m. ET / noon Pacific.

More at www.nascar.com. You can follow Kyle Petty on Twitter @kylepetty and Rutledge Wood @RutledgeWood.

In 2008, Guy Fieri was named Grand Marshal of the Toyota/Save Mart 350. In 2009, he attended simply as a race fan.

And although Guy's company, Knuckle Sandwich, is no longer listed as official sponsor, Tommy Baldwin Racing is on the unofficial entry list for the race, with driver Brian Simo in #36.

Pictures and comments from NY Times / Nascar / Guy Fieri event

@chefguyfieri started this morning with a tweet to over 18,000 fans, "In nyc shootin ulitmate recipe showdown. Last day, it airs in march. Huge event with NASCAR, tommy baldwin racing, and NY times last nite."

Guy Fieri cooked for the assembled crowd, making his signature Cajun Chicken Alfredo (recipe).

The Daily Zeny blogged, "I attended a reception hosted by the New York Times introducing a very unlikely partnership between the NYT, NASCAR, Tommy Baldwin Racing and Guy Fieri. ... The best part of the reception is Guy Fieri--he's hilarious, down-to-earth...."

Those assembled had the opportunity to learn more about advertising and promotional possibilities with NASCAR.

According to LuckyDogRacing, 37% of the US population, that's 75 million Americans are NASCAR fans. NASCAR is the number 2 sport in terms of TV ratings, only behind the NFL.

NASCAR's 40 million hard-core fans spend nearly 9 hours a week following NASCAR through all types of media outlets.

And Scarborough Research found that from 2007 to 2008, roughly 30% of fans are blue collar, 40% of fans are white collar. 56% of NASCAR fans have an annual income of over $50,000, and 20% of fans make over $100,000 each year.

NASCAR fans spend an estimated $1.5 - $2 billion on advertised products.

My husband says, "That's a lot of money spent watching a lot of cars make a lot of left turns ...." Haha.

Mixed bag of biz for Guy Fieri this week

Wow. I take a day or two away from blogging, and my email inbox if full, full, full. Here's a brief rundown of the past few days.

The Sun Chronicle reports that fans flocked to downtown Attleboro, Mass, to Morin's Diner in hopes of participating in the Triple-D taping scheduled there on Thursday of this week, July 27th, 2009. I suppose this is why the restaurants are not announced in advance, hmm?

Devoted fans started lining up outside the diner at 4 a.m. "I think some regulars stayed away because they knew what was going on," said owner Billy Morin.

A group of roughly 25 greeted Fieri, including this young fan at left, who had her Diners, Drive-ins and Dives cookbook autographed.

Additional taping will be done 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, to interview guests. Guy will not be present at the second taping.

I rarely see so many Twitters from Guy - one of note - "Just fyi not in kansas city, someone sayin they're me." (Guy's Twitter) So the Kansas City Impostor is still afoot. Argh. Read more about the K.C. Impostor and a Vegas Impersonator here.

Now people are beginning to wonder with whom are they having their picture taken - check out this picture from mmattozzi, titled "Guy Fieri: Probably Not," taken at Comic-Con in San Diego July 25, 2009:

I'm also beginning to suspect there is a Guy Fieri Impostor in Seattle, too. Several Twitters I've seen have him there, when the media has him clear across the country. Does make one wonder ....

----------------------------------

While in New York this morning, Friday July 31st, the real Guy Fieri made an appearance on Good Morning America, where they claim Guy's S'more Pizza isn't just for kids!

Ingredients:
2 store bought pizza dough
1/2 cup bench flour
1/4 cup corn meal
3 cups mini marshmallows
2 bars dark chocolate
1 sleeve graham crackers, crushed
1/4 cup slivered almonds
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Preheat oven or grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Form pizza dough into 12" – 14" rounds, ¼ inch thick. Bake in oven on pizza stone for 6-8 minutes or until just beginning to brown.

Grill method: Use indirect method: Form dough round, slide onto hot grill, let cook for 3 minutes, turn and add toppings, close grill lid to melt, serve immediately

While pizza crust is cooking, toast slivered in a sauté pan over medium high heat.

Remove and in same pan, melt butter.

When butter is melted, add in graham cracker crumbs, chili powder, cayenne and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Remove from heat and set aside.

Remove from oven and top with half of the marshmallows, randomly place one bar of chocolate over marshmallows, return to oven, 3-5 minutes of until marshmallows are puffed and lightly browned.

Remove from oven and sprinkle with the graham cracker mixture and top with the toasted slivered almonds. Let rest 3-4 minutes, slice and serve.

Repeat for second pizza.

And if you like the look of that, check out S'more Eggrolls.

And Guy's Gaucho Steak with 4-Herb Chimichurri popped up again. The recipe has been featured in Family Circle Magazine, on Parents.com and in Sunset Magazine.

Click here to view "Heating Up the Grill With Guy - ABC News - where Guy Fieri prepares gaucho steak and corn on the cob.

On Sunday, #36, the Toyota Camry that Guy Fieri's Knuckle Sandwich brand sponsors races in the 2009 Pennsylvania 500, at Pocono Raceway, this time driven by NASCAR driver Patrick Carpentier.

Last note: if anyone snaps some nice pictures at the Atlantic City Wine & Food Festival (harrahs.com)this weekend and you'd like to share, just send me a note. Thanks! I'll be particularly interested in hearing how many people handed $1000 over for "The Feast of Fieri!"

Car #36 results from the Brickyard 400

Ok, so Mike Skinner didn't win the race at Indy today, Sunday July 26, 2009 at the Brickyard 400. In fact, he finished in the pit - transmission issues.

But he got in 35 laps, and the car looked great!

Here are two pictures I found of car #36, sponsored by the brand "Guy Fieri Knuckle Sandwich."

I can only say that I think a couple of my design ideas were better. It totally needed El Fuego flames going down the side. And a skull in a chef's hat. With sunglasses on the back of his head. Holding Ergo knives. But they did well enough ... I suppose. (humor)

Tommy Baldwin Racing, if you're reading this, I'll only charge a nominal fee to design the hood of the car next time ....

Guy Fieri sponsors Tommy Baldwin Racing of NASCAR

Tommy Baldwin Racing is going to have Guy Fieri as a sponsor.

Guy Fieri will sponsor TBR's #36 Toyota at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard Sunday, July 26, 2009 in Indianapolis, IN. Recall that Guy Fieri is a car fanatic and a fan of NASCAR in general. His logo will be on the hood of the TBR Toyota Camry.
"I was Grand Marshall at Infineon Raceway and had an amazing time. When this opportunity came up, I jumped on it. NASCAR is an amazing way to promote my (Knuckle Sandwich) brand, and I look forward to supporting Tommy's efforts to continue to build his organization. We all have to start somewhere and what Tommy has done this year, I really admire." - Guy Fieri
Tommy Baldwin, owner of Tommy Baldwin Racing would like to see this relationship grow into a marketing win-win-win. “We think there is a great opportunity for food companies with strong brands to be associated with Guy, TBR and NASCAR racing as a whole,” Baldwin said. "I respect what Guy has been able to accomplish in his career and know that our new relationship is just another recipe for success.”

Pluff Mudder, of FoodNetworkFans.com writes, "I know Tommy, he was the crew chief for a couple of years for my friend when he drove a Cup car. It expensive to own and operate a Cup team (especially these days and times) and Tommy's been having a tough time with sponsorship because he's one of the "little guys" who owns just one team unlike the big guys like Roush and Hendrick. Thanks to Guy for helping him out."

Mike Skinner (Susanville, CA) will drive the Toyota Camry in Sunday's race. Skinner, currently ranked 55th, will make his 259th start this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He has 10 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series top-five and 38 top-10 finishes over those starts. He also earned the 1995 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship for Richard Childress Racing.

The Brickyard 400 will be televised live Sunday, July 26th beginning at 1 p.m. EST on ESPN and will be broadcast live on IMS Radio.

Just out of curiosity, if you were to design the hood of a Guy Fieri racing car, what design would you use?

Haha! Enjoy your weekend.
-----------------------------------------------------------

By the way and totally off topic, I think that the upcoming Houston episodes of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives are going to be (please, please pardon me for this ...) off the hook. I have received literally thousands of hits on all of my Houston-oriented posts. The interest is bordering on obscene! And I mean that in a good way.

Houston fans and foodies, here's another article, an interview with Guy Fieri, with many mentions of his experiences in Houston, Texas - www.dailycomet.com

On Saturday, June 20, 2009, Guy wrote from Twitter, "At infineon raceway in sonoma, great day, killer weather, rollin with lori and hunter. Gonna see kenny stablers car run today, so kewl!"

And Monday the 22nd wrote, "Had a great time on fathers day at nascar race with hunter, ryder, and my dad. In houston shootin triple d till thurs."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Houston Chronical reports that Food Network’s Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives fame was seen late-night dining at Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Houston, Texas, with Dan Pastorini and friends on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. This report a day after Guy Fieri said as much from Twitter.
The friendly food guy signed autographs on napkins and butter plates for admirers who included Theresa Quartaro and Mary Donna Moceri, events coordinator for Grotto 610. Fieri said he was in town shooting a piece on local hot spots. Proprietor Johnny Carrabba (Moceri’s cousin) just missed the TV star, having headed home a bit earlier.
Pastorini, quarterback for the Houston Oilers 1971 - 1979, the Oakland Raiders 1980, the L.A. Rams 1981 and the Philadelphia Eagles 1983, currently lives and works in Houston as President of DP7 racing www.dp7racing.com.

At the time of this writing, I've heard no news on which places Guy visited in Houston, Texas for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this week. Sorry!

At Infineon, in Texas and upcoming DDD taping in Ohio

Last year, Guy Fieri was named Grand Marshall and did a cooking demonstration at the event pictured at left.

Monica from the Sprint Crew blogs of Nascar Blogs was at the Infineon Raceway this past Father's day weekend, and had a brief visit with Guy Fieri at the raceway.
I ran into the famous Chef Guy Fieri, who wanted to experience this race weekend as a true race fan and not celebrity. He camped out with a group of close buddies, cooking for other campers around him and even hand delivered food to the police officers on duty at the race. Fieri said jokingly, “I needed to make friends with as many law enforcement personal I as I could in the state of California!.” Ha-ha!
Yeah, Guy. You might want to work on that. LOL ~D

This painting pictured at right was auctioned for $5000 to raise money for charities in 2008.

Guy is in Houston, TX this week, taping for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. He is scheduled to hit Ohio in late July for the show.

But Lannae from Lannae's Food and Travel writes,
The word on the street is that Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food TV Network will be filming at Melt, to showcase all the great grilled cheese options you can get there. Melt will be shut down for 2 days for filming, because the kitchen is way too small for the film crew, Guy and owner chef to be in kitchen at the same time and even fathom to carry on a normal day's business. What that means for you, if you are up there, they will need people to sit in as diners and patrons of Melt. Who knows, this may be your day for fame on TV!
Read her review of Melt; sounds wonderful.
