Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them.
Ray, Florida wrote: "Did Guy Fieri drive anything other than the Camaro on early episodes of DDD? (my wife and I have a bet)"
Our answer: "Hi Ray! He sure did. You can see Guy driving a dark blue '66 Mustang in the first season, www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCuhtoxqKXk, at The Beacon Drive-in, in South Carolina and also here, www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSaIU1f5TNw, at The Bayway Diner in Linden, NJ. So who wins the bet? :)"
Ray's reply: ")-: My wife wins the bet. I have watched (thought I did) every episode and I could have sworn (falsely) that he only drove the Camaro. Oh well, my wife needs to win sometimes (actually, she wins too often). Thank you very much for your quick response! Kind regards, Ray"
Ray and his wife have inspired me to do a bit of further research, listing all the cars that have appeared on the show. Certainly the '67 Camaro and the 'Stang, but Guy's Shelby Cobra has also made a cameo on the show, and of course there was the "Woody" in the Hawaii episodes. We'll do further research and see what we can come up with. Thanks Ray!

Guy Fieri in recent news, December 2010
Every so often, tidbits of Guy Fieri-related news and interviews don't make it into our regular posts. Today seems like a good day to play catch-up.
The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Lee Schrager, founder and mastermind behind the South Beach and New York City Food and Wine Festivals. Excerpt:
Those KitchenAid mixers, together with $4 million in ticket sales, raise over $2 million each year for the Florida International University School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center.

Last week, Guy Fieri took time from his busy schedule to talk with Mancow.

Ok, this is actually REALLY, really old news. But somehow, it just never made it to the blog ....
Do you have a teacher who inspired or mentored you? Guy does. Check out TeachersCount, and read about his middle school history teacher, Fran Moriarty Fischer, who taught him how to harness his energy, the secret ingredient for his success. "She could do it all: inspire, educate and mentor" - Guy Fieri

And Johnny Garlic's, co-owned by Guy Fieri and Steve Gruber, will open their 4th location in Dublin, CA. The expansion project is set for a March 2011 opening.
Diablomag.com writes, "Johnny Garlic's menu is packed with a variety of comfort food favorite like Tri Tip Dip sandwich, Fire-Roasted Quesadilla, Cajun Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, and Pesto Goat Cheese Pizza."
AroundDublinBlog.com adds, "Johnny Garlic’s General Manager Neil McDowell said that Guy and the entire Johnny Garlic’s family is 'excited about opening in Dublin.'"
The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Lee Schrager, founder and mastermind behind the South Beach and New York City Food and Wine Festivals. Excerpt:
But the secret of his success as a festival organizer might be the patience and attention he lavishes on the stars.
Festival veteran and Food Network star Guy Fieri recalled the time he asked Schrager if he could make pancakes out of organic batter and coloring and bring kids out of the stands to a buffet of toppings. Schrager responded: "OK Guy, that sounds interesting." More recently, Fieri asked that 10 KitchenAid mixers be tricked out like hot rods for auction.
"Even when I throw out, 'OK Lee, so I want to cook on the moon and everybody gets to fly the space shuttle.' 'OK Guy, that sounds interesting,'" Fieri said with a laugh.

I run into people all the time, random people who like the show, like football players -- anybody that has to travel, because a lot of time you sit in your hotel room -- I think the biggest mind-blowing call ever was from Matthew McConaughey. Not only is he a great guy, but he is a great support to me with advice. He is the kind of celebrity, one who has a positive image and gives back to charity with his foundation, who I really admire. I really take his advice to heart. -Guy Fieri (via)

Guy Fieri with Red the M&M, plus news on The Nook
Guy Fieri made an appearance with M&M's superstar, Red, on Entertainment Tonight (syndicated by CBS) to talk about holiday decorations, presents and, of course, yuletide treats.

On a more somber note, The Nook, a favorite burger joint in St. Paul, Minnesota, was destroyed by fire in an early morning fire. CBS Minnesota reported that the fire started around 3:30 a.m. in the kitchen.
The owners, Ted Casper and Mike Runyon, plan to rebuild The Nook. “We won’t quit. We’ll fix it, but it’s just, we have to start all over,” said Runyon. “Just another story in the long life of The Nook, I guess.” Click here for the story. For a photo of the interior, click here.

More on "Minute to Win It" holiday episodes
On Monday, December 6th, Guy Fieri set up a satellite feed from Johnny Garlic's in Windsor, CA, to do "Minute to Win It" interviews with various news agencies around the country, promoting NBC's holiday-themed episodes of the "life changing" game show.
The first of the three episodes aired last week on Tuesday, December 7th with a repeat on Friday the 10th. The second airs tomorrow, Tuesday, December 14, 2010 and also repeats on Friday the 17th. The last of the three is scheduled to air on December 21st.
Pop Culture Passionistas has uploaded four snippets of their interview time on YouTube.

The show has performed well for NBC in the Nielsen ratings; almost 7 million viewers tuned in on December 7th, and almost 5 million tuned in to the repeat on December 10th. More importantly, "Minute to Win It" tied for for the lead in the all-important 18-49 demographic on the 10th.
Like many game shows and most reality shows, "Minute to Win It" is rated TV-PG; it may be unsuitable for younger children, under age 10, without the guidance of a parent. Many parents watch "Minute to Win It" with their younger children, and the show has been criticized for its suggestive costuming, camera angles and the humorous names for the games.
Click here to meet The Game Guru, one of the wizards responsible for thinking up these games for the show.
But as much as we are fans of Guy Fieri, truly, the games are the star of the show. Elementary and secondary schools all over the country (and the world) have "Minute to Win It" events; colleges, bars, radio stations and companies use the games at their get-togethers and many a birthday party has had a "Minute to Win It" theme this year.

Guy Fieri cooks for AFLAC
Ok readers, this one took me by surprise. Hadn't heard ANYthing about this until it happened. But apparently, Guy Fieri flew from his Triple D shoot in Indianapolis to Nashville, TN, to cook dinner and make drinks for AFLAC managers at or near the Opryland Hotel on Friday, December 10, 2010.
This is Guy's third trip to Nashville this year: first for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, next for a cooking demo at the Grand Reopening of the Gayloard Opryland Hotel, and now ... AFLAC!
@CareerBoosters provided the photos, tweeting, "Guy Fieri just served us sexy sangria."
Stephen wrote, "Guy Fieri cooking for AFLAC food is Great," Paul wrote, "Laughing my crack off as Guy Fieri cooks us dinner. Too cool!"
Ken wrote, "Listening to Guy Fieri speak!!! The dude is cool! and Nicholas wrote, "Newt Gingrich in the morning and now Guy Fieri making us dinner and drinks! I love this job."
Before the dinner event, Guy spent some time at the Farmer's Market in Nashville, hard-hit by the May floods, dropping by Jamaicaway Catering and Restaurant to offer is support during their tumultuous times. More on that story here.
Guy was also sighted noshing at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack in Nashville, and he was sighted at Robert's Western World after dinner.
In other fans of Guy Fieri news, Roz Petalz Studio sent some "Chili Pepper" pendants to Guy Fieri. "I've never gotten a thank you before from any celebrity I've sent things too. Guy is too kewl."
And Danny Hendricks sent off about 4 weeks ago for a special autograph for his sweetie and wrote, "I also got and autograph from Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives) and famous Chef. SWEET ! !" We think that's pretty sweet too.

News from DD&D's, plus radio interviews
Just a quick note this morning:
In April 2010, Guy Fieri and Diners Drive-ins and Dives visited Nashville, TN. The last of the restaurants from that trip premieres on Monday, December 13, Wings 'n Things; and it couldn't come at a better time for Jamaicaway.Jamaicaway is in danger of closing due to the spring Nashville floods. The record flooding shut down the Farmers' Market, including Jamaicaway, during its three busiest months: May, June, and July. Customers will attempt to save the restaurant by attending a benefit event tomorrow, Saturday, December 11th at the restaurant. It starts at 6 p.m.
Save Jamaicaway! Check Out the Benefit Party This Weekend - read more about the event at NashvilleScene.com.
*Update* Guy Fieri stopped in to visit Jamaicaway today. "What a GREAT guy!! (pun intended). Guy Fieri was JUST at Jamaicaway! He stopped by to encourage us... Will we see him at the Benefit Party??" - @jamaicaway

M2WI holiday specials start tonight
“Minute to Win It” has become a hit for NBC network, so it was no surprise when NBC pulled together some last minute holiday-themed episodes that will begin airing tonight, Tuesday, December 7, 2010, with more episodes on the 14th and 21st of December.
New episodes give "reindeer games" a whole new meaning?
Guy Fieri taped the Christmas shows on Thursday and Friday, November 18th and 19th. Hollywoodjunket was at the taping and reported that audiences were treated to a fun holiday atmosphere with “Santa Helpers” models, assisting with prizes and cheering-on contestants. Studio audiences walked away with gifts: “Despicable Me” DVD and a Wii “Minute to Win It” game autographed by Guy Fieri.
Contestants played in twos: a girlfriend/boyfriend, best friends and a mother/daughter. Special holiday bonuses included a flat screen television, an extra "life," and ten extra seconds to complete their tasks. The grand prize was increased to $3 million for the holiday shows.
Expect another marriage proposal (the show’s third one), an updated stage with animated lights and new games: "Nice Build" – two players have to stack paper reams into a pyramid without falling; "Maze Craze" – one player must navigate a marble in a maze atop a board. The maze consists of rubber bands and screws. The marble must make its way to the end of the board; "The Rebound" has two players – one hitting the ball to the others clipboard and aiming it into a basket.

Fifty-four-year-old Myles Henry, co-owner of the Maine Diner, died Friday, Dec. 3, in Marco Island, Fla., after apparently having passed out and hit his head in a restaurant bathroom, according to multiple sources.
While Henry's official cause of death is yet to be determined by the District 20 Medical Examiner's Office in Florida, Henry's wife, Trisha Henry, said the longtime local business owner was born with two heart deformities — a bicuspid aortic valve and Wolf Parkinson White syndrome — which she said could have led to a heart attack.
Henry and his brother, Dick Henry, had purchased what is now the Maine Diner off Route 1 in 1983, and the establishment has been thriving ever since.

"Cook with Tom" suggests Fieri-Ergo knives
"Cook With Tom" is a recurring segment on ABC 4′s “Good Things Utah” morning news program. Tom recently included Ergo Chef's Guy Fieri line of knives as one of his Gifts for the Kitchen suggestions.
Tom wrote, "Guy Fieri Knives from Ergo Chef: Ergo Chef knives are a result of a classically trained chef that developed carpel tunnel syndrome from frequent knife usage. The Ergo Chef “Guy Fieri” knife combines the beauty of a Japanese knife, the brute strength of a German knife, and the arm saving ergonomics of proper design. The hollow ground blade reduces the amount of stick on your food. Available [in Utah] at Spoons and Spice, Love to Cook, and Dillard’s as well as online at www.ergochef.com. Santoku retails for $55, and paring knife retails for $35"

Fan questions, November 2010
Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [ZWorks, Brooks Agency, FN et al., if you can help shed light on any of these questions, please feel free to comment. ~D]
Barbara, Roanoke,VA wrote, "Why did the show have to end? It was great watching it with the family. My children miss it. They will so excited to know that it will be on 3 times in December. Guy has a great personality, a real people person. We just love him and the show. Please bring the show back. thanks"
Our answer: "Thanks for writing in. Minute to Win It is currently on hiatus. NBC is airing three holiday 'Minute to Win It' specials in December, Tuesdays on the 7th, 14th and 21st. The program is scheduled to return to Wednesday nights at 8pm/7c on NBC beginning January 5, 2011." More on Minute to Win It.

Paul DFW wrote, "I was just at Ricardo Avila's new location in Dallas [Avila's, Mama's Cookin' ~D]. I asked him about his telling DDD about Louies [Louie's, Family Favorites ~D] and he confrimed it. He said that the show needed a replacement for a restaurant that didn't work out (They started filming and realized it wasn't DDD quality) he said they wouldn't tell him the name of the restaurant. I however have figured it out with proof. Do you want the info, or to keep it quiet?"
Our answer: "Thanks for writing in. Avila's is a very popular DDD location! Many readers write in asking for its address. Please pass our regards on to Ricardo. You knew Guy was recently in DFW at a charity event with Mario Batali? Guy also had a meet & greet at Dillard's in nearby Hurst. Guy loves the area. And yes! Very curious about the replaced restaurant that didn't work out. What did you learn?"
Paul's reply: "Well in the back the second book about DDD, there is a listing of restaurants that DDD has visited. Last March I noticed the Massey's in Fort Worth was listed. I figured it would be on a future episode; however it never happened. The local reviews of the place are mixed. I've got to believe that this is the restaurant that they bailed out on.
"Ricardo said that they (the support staff at DDD) would not say who the restaurant was. I told him that when I got home I would look up the name of the restaurant, and would tell him on my next visit. After checking the book I notified you.
Love you site and check it a few times a week."
Our reply: "Fascinating! We love hearing some of the back stories from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We know of at least two locations where the show taped, and they've never aired. Not sure exactly why that is nor how it works. And thanks for reading!" More on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Cooking tips from Guy Fieri demo at Opryland
On Saturday, November 20, Guy Fieri presented a 90-minute cooking demonstration and luncheon at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, as a part of the Hotel's grand re-opening. The main dish of the lunch was an alternate post-Thanksgiving dish, Tequila Turkey Fettuccini (recipe).
@vdreffs tweeted - Guy Fieri brought the house down at Gaylord #Opryland this afternoon. Check out his Tequilla Lime Turkey Fetticcinne recipe.
The demonstration was sprinkled with various cooking tips and humor. @DinaORourke tweeted - Guy Fieri #opryland "I'm allergic to Tequila....I break out in handcuffs"
Along with the Tequila Turkey Fettuccini paired with Red Devil Cranberries (recipe), Guy made Garlic Parmesan Crab (recipe TBA on an upcoming episode of Guy's Big Bite) and a Rhuberry Breeze cocktail (recipe unavailable at this time).
Combine different flavor profiles: salt, sweet, spice and sour. The Rhuberry Breeze cocktail contains the bitter of rhubarb and the sweetness of strawberry.
Brining boosts the flavor. The reason homemade pork chops taste dry in comparison to juicy restaurant-made pork chops is the brine, Fieri said.
To brine add 1 cup sugar and 1 cup salt to a gallon of water. Toss in spices like bay leaf and peppercorn. Bring it to a simmer for 20 minutes and submerge the meat. The larger the meat, the longer to submerge. A pork chop takes four hours, while a turkey takes 24 hours.
More tips: Do not burn the garlic. The secret to non-clumpy pasta is water. If feeding a large group, pre-cook the pasta by boiling the noodles until al dente, then transferring them to an ice bath, which stops the cooking.
Immediately before serving, sauté the noodles and “hit it with acid.” Translation: squeeze a lemon wedge over the food.
“... the best place to learn where to cook is your mother-in-law’s house,” Fieri joked.
@skilletsister tweeted from the demo - Guy Fieri says Vita-mix blender worth the investment. Do not overfill it. When blending a drink, fill the appliance half-full with ice. Fieri said most people overfill their blenders and do not blend long enough.
Taste the food before seasoning.
Use fresh garlic and Parmesan cheese. @DinaORourke tweeted - Guy Fieri #opryland on parmesan cheese....stay away from the green shakers of death. Rather than jars of garlic and tubs of grated Parmesan cheese, Fieri said, garlic cloves and Parmesan wedges offer a fresher taste.
Cook turkey and other meats with the bone. The bone will add an extra depth of flavor.
