Snapshots from AC Food & Wine Fest, 2010

Atlantic City Weekly was on hand at The Food Network sponsored Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival official kick-off party, Thursday night, July 29, 2010 at the Chelsea Hotel.

Food Network stars, including Guy Fieri, Anne Burrell and Robert Irvine mingled with fans and enjoyed cocktails, sliders, spring rolls and other munchies around the outdoor pool on Chelsea’s fifth floor.

Also, last year's Next Food Network Star winner Melissa d"Arabian and current contestants Brad Sorenson, Serena Palumbo, Tom Pizzica and Aarti Sequeira were spotted at the party.

Recent interviews w/ Guy Fieri, plus more

Hollywood Life, a website with an irritating shocking pink color scheme, tells us 6 things we didn't know about Guy Fieri:
My first restaurant was going to be named “extremes”!
My first car was a brown 1976 (Datsun) 28OZ!
My first horse was named “Rebel”!
My first restaurant job was at Romans Mexican Restaurant in Ferndale, CA.
The first album I owned was AC/DC Back in Black!
The first foreign country I visited was France, as an exchange student!
Yes, complete with missing capitalization and apostrophes, misplacement of punctuation outside quotes and irritating exclamation points appended to each of the six things. Let us move forward, shall we?

Atlantic City is gearing up for what Guy Fieri calls "a Top 5 culinary event around the country. ... I’m doing a Big Bite brunch and the Philly Cheesesteak Battle," Guy said in a recent interview with AC Weekly.

"Every time I show up, I get to be part of a really cool party. You’re blessed if you live in the area. If you are going to the event you are going to have a great time. The people putting on the festival are working really hard to build a great event."

Best thing Guy Fieri ever ate, in a bowl

Food Network's wildly popular "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" has a new episode tonight. Guy Fieri will have a segment on the show this week, and we're here to conjecture what his "best thing" recommendation will be.

This week's installment is The Best Thing I Ever Ate: In a Bowl - index page or view the show's episode guide.

Your favorite Food Network stars including Guy Fieri, Sunny Anderson, and Duff can't contain themselves as they dish up the goods on some of their favorite foods - including delicious spicy chili, creamy tender gnocchi, incredible hand pulled noodles and more. One thing is certain, this episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate is sure to bowl you over!

Of the described dishes, we believe Guy will talk noodles!

"Guy decided he really wanted to learn how to make these amazing noodles, so he coerced the chef into teaching him, and I proceeded to take pictures of it all!" - www.nycfoodie.com

"I love Chinatown. I’m a big noodle fan and I like Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles." - Guy Fieri, via www.amny.com

"I’m a huge Chinatown fan. I love Tasty Handpulled Noodles (1 Doyer St./Bowery)—it’s the bomb!" - Guy Fieri, via modernluxury.com

"... the "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" host, who had enjoyed an appropriately divey lunch at Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles on Doyer St. earlier in the day." - www.nypost.com

"AlwaysHungry for: Chinese food. 'Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles knock it out.'" -Guy Fieri, via www.alwayshungryny.com

So that's what we think. Haha! Guy, if you get on this show and talk about spicy chili or creamy tender gnocchi, we'll have to eat our words ... in a bowl.

New un-hosted segments for Triple D, plus more news

Hello dedicated readers. Again, my apologies for the lack of posts. Summer time is travel time, and we've been a-hoofin' it lately! Hope this gets us caught up to date ....

Recently, the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives red Camaro has been spotted in at least two locations, sans Guy Fieri. According to Connecticut Now, Corey's Catsup & Mustard will be featured on an upcoming episode of the show, un-hosted.

*Premieres 2/28/11 - Favorites With a Twist*

Food Network film crews taped there Tuesday, July 20th, after having recieved so many fan recommendations. One can only assume that Guy Fieri's schedule does not allow him to travel to every likely restaurant in every shoot pod.

Corey's Catsup & Mustard will be joined by Superior, Wisconsin's Anchor Bar and others in a new feature of Triple D, a "viewers' choice" segment, which will follow the three restaurants Fieri visits each episode.

The New York Times recently interviewed the creators of NBC's Minute to Win It show, writing, "Typically when television creators want to gather ideas, they huddle in a writers’ room or maybe head out to a long expense-account lunch. When the creators of “Minute to Win It” need inspiration, they head to Target or a hardware store."

To date, the summer episodes have been well received by viewers, averaging 6.5 million in its Wednesday night slot, against "Big Brother" and "So You Think You Can Dance."

Heath Luman, one of the supervising producers feels one of the factors leading to the show's popularity is, "you can literally go to your cabinet, grab the supplies and play the games with your family during the commercial break."

The Times' article continued, "that NBC can promote the homemade games as an inexpensive form of family entertainment in a difficult economy is another plus, the producers say."

Craig Plestis, an executive producer, said the game makers come into work with bags of household items and stock them on shelves labeled as different rooms of a house. As the show was being developed, “it was like coming into work to a toy factory,” Mr. Plestis said.

By now the producers have pitched roughly 1,000 games. About 150 have made it onto the show.

Guy Fieri scheduled for Fabulous Food Show 2010

Tickets for the 2010 Fabulous Food Show in Cleveland, Ohio, go on sale 10 a.m., Monday, July 19, 2010 at www.fabulousfoodshow.com. The Fabulous Food Show is scheduled Friday through Sunday, November 12-14, 2010 at the International Exposition Center.

Guy Fieri is a featured presenter in the main kitchen theater on Saturday, November 13th with three time slots: 12:15, 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. Other celebrity headliners include Giada De Laurentiis, Alton Brown and Michael Symon.

At the time of this writing, book signing schedules are TBA. Admission tickets are $25 to $65.

An excerpt from the Fabulous Food Show's conversation with Guy Fieri:

Fabulous Food Show: The official bio from your PR team describes you as the Food Networks “bad Boy” star. Why Bad Boy?
Guy Fieri: I don’t know. I didn’t write it. They just stereotype me because of the tattoos and spiked bleached hair and my thing for hot rods and rock-n-roll. But I’m a good guy, a dad and a real family man.

FFS: You started in the front of the house as a waiter, maitre d’ and manager. Then you became a Food Network celebrity after entering a contest. Where does cooking come into the mix?
GF: When I was 12, I’d cook for my parents dinner parties, making food for eight. I’ve been working in kitchens since I was a teenager. I started out washing dishes and doing prep and have been a line cook, a bartender, even a flambé captain which meant I cooked tableside in the restaurant. Now I have five restaurants and I develop recipes for all of them.

FFS: Do you cook at home for your wife and kids, for friends?
GF: I make dinner as often as I can. We usually eat whatever I’m testing for the restaurants and the shows. It could be anything from a Vietnamese style banh mi sandwich to beet salad with goat cheese or shepherds pie.

Guy Fieri at Celebrity Softball Game

Guy Fieri was one of many entertainment and sports celebrities to play in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game*, Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA.

Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Gary Carter, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, Rickey Henderson, Paul Molitor, Ozzie Smith and Dave Winfield are expected to play, while celebrities scheduled to participate include Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), Billy Bob Thornton (actor), James Denton (Desperate Housewives), Jennie Finch (USA gold medal softball player), Mario Lopez (Extra host) and Maria Menounos (Access Hollywood host).

Celebrity newcomers included supermodel Marissa Miller, celebrity chef Guy Fieri and actor Michael Clarke Duncan, perhaps best known for his starring role in the film adaptation of "The Green Mile." Duncan, though, didn't win the size prize. That went to Quinton Aaron, star of the Oscar-nominated film, "The Blind Side."

"Let's just put this together. I'm going to get out there and Ricky Henderson is going to hit at me. Nice!" Guy said. "That's fantastic. But I'm a fan of the game, so this is awesome. We're meeting the greats, and we get to play ball with them."

Guy Fieri, the busiest guy in television these days, for even I recognize him from the fine work he does on the Food Network, as well as his excellent hosting of ... what's that reality show ... oh, "The Dumb Stuff Dumb People Do," or something along those lines.

Fieri can hit, of that there is no doubt. Hitting is about 90% confidence and 10% luck, and this guy has plenty of both.

MLB's All Star Weekend is expected to raise $5 million for national charities. The celebrity softball game is scheduled to air on ESPN tonight, Monday, July 12, 2010 at 8pm ET, right after the State Farm Home Run Derby.

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives set to tape in Atlantic City region

At the end of July, 2010, Atlantic City, NJ gears up for one of the top wine and food festivals in the country. In a recent interview with the Atlantic City Weekly, Guy Fieri said,

“This year, as soon as I get done doing the Food & Wine Fest, the entire Triple D film crew will be in A.C. We will be shooting in A.C. and around A.C. for four days doing Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that following week. We are bringing Triple D to A.C.”

Fieri also expressed his passion for the Atlantic City region. "It has a small town charm but with big city opportunity. You get huge headlines that come to A.C., you have good food, you have good people, you've got the beach . . . Come on, you can walk right outside of a casino and go to a beach. When I tell my buddies it's A.C. time you should see them going into this lottery over who gets to go to the A.C. event. When I hit A.C. there will probably be 10 to 20 people in my group flying in from all around the country."

Random recent tidbits, July 2010

Here are a few random tidbits, collected over the past few weeks.

In early June, Guy Fieri was in the New England area for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, a few appearances and just a bit of time off.

TV star chef Guy Fieri talks tomatoes with our chef Raymond Gillespie

Salumeria Italiana - website
151 Richmond Street

------------------------------------------------------

Guy Fieri brought his live road show to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in mid-June. The NC Times reported:

"Del Mar Fairgrounds officials say they do all they can to make the performers who come to the fair feel comfortable. Even if that means stocking their dressing rooms with their favorite snacks (Corn Nuts and black licorice for TV chef Guy Fieri and Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies for Dennis DeYoung) or providing them with a certain type of towel."

------------------------------------------------------

And when Guy breezed into NYC recently to promote Hampton Inn’s Wake Up with Waffles breakfast campaign A.M New York sat down to chat about breakfast, healthy eating, and, of course, his hair. "And, yes, he wore sunglasses the entire time."

What do you eat for breakfast?
Typically my son, Hunter [14], does the cooking for breakfast. On holidays and weekends, I’ll make eggs and turkey sausage. I love grits, ham and red-eye gravy [made by cooking the ham in coffee]. During the week though, I’ll usually have a banana, coffee and a bagel. I love juicing too.

Any change in your signature look on the horizon?
It wasn’t ever really designed to go this long. It started as either a joke or a challenge.

How often do you dye your hair?
Every six or eight weeks.

Will we ever see you as a brunette?
You might see me with a shaved head before you see me dark.

DDD iPhone apps violate trademarks?

To date, we have found three iPhone applications that map and direct users to Guy Fieri's diners, drive-ins and dives. One of my regular readers, the developer of one such iPhone app, wrote that attorneys from Scripps have contacted him with a cease and desist.

Scripps, the owner of the Food Network and The Travel Channel, has stated that the iPhone app is in violation of their trademarks. Scripps' attorneys are saying they will take action if the developer does not remove the apps. The developer has contacted two different IP lawfirms; both say the entrepreneurs are not in violation.

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Locator has been renamed TV Diner.

Lisa Kruger, public relations representative from the Food Network confirmed. "Yes, Scripps has issued a cease and desist order and I am not able to comment on this request further. Should you need anything else, we may need to connect you to our business affairs and legal team."

I submitted a request for more information, "perhaps the business office would like to explain, in laymen's terms, plain English, the reasons, process or motivation behind the cease and desist? It's my belief that fans will just want to understand." At the time of this writing, we have not yet had a reply.

Guy Fieri's public relations representative at The Brooks Group declined to forward a comment from Guy Fieri, and left all comments pertaining to this issue in the hands of the Food Network.

Lisa Campbell, developer of TripleD App, wrote:
I haven't received any communication from Scripps requesting any changes to my website, iPhone or Android apps. My apps don't pretend to be endorsed or have any affiliation with the actual show, we are simply a fan guide. If Scripps wants to destroy the loyal and growing group of people (myself included) who love the show and look forward to watching Guy, then I can't think of a better way. If they are really threatening to shut down fan sites, then it's going to kill the show.

There are a few fan sites out there, and together we've helped build the community they are trying to destroy. For the sake of the show, I hope Scripps let's the fan community continue to live!

And Rick Graner, webmaster at FlavorTownUSA.com commented:
I think someone on top is scared of this new thing called the Internet and smartphones and is upset that others are doing a better job of marketing & promoting their product then they are.

These people should be embracing fans like us with letters of appreciation and should look to do more joint ventures with us who love the show enough to do the leg work for them.

I'm extremely upset that this is happening because it's always been my stance that I'm helping support their product and making it grow (for free) so any business person who bites the hand(s) that feed them is not really a smart business person.

Dr. Rob McCleland, an iPhone customer who helps me enormously by collecting "Guy Ate Here" spray-paint stenciled tags from several dozen restaurants featured on the show, commented on the iPhone app he uses, "I love that app and visit far more DDDs as a result of having it. I used it to find all six of the Triple D's in Charlotte [North Carolina] last week. -- Sent from my iPhone"

He continued by email:
Both as Business School professor in Marketing and as a huge Triple D fan, I don't get it. The show is popular because of the consumer, the fan. The best marketing in the world is viral. When your fans create maps and blogs and apps, popularity rises... and it costs you nothing!

Do you know of ANY social marketing expert that would even begin to suggest that controlling marketing from a corporate office is more powerful or effective than the viral communication of a tribe? This hurts the brand, the image, and hacks off your loyal consumer base--who have allegiance to the brand and each other.

As a business prof, I'm confused. As a consumer and huge Triple D fan, I'm upset. If 100 people created blogs and 100 more created apps, some of them would make it but most would not. Who would decide? The consumer. If someone's app or idea or blog is better than yours--learn from them! Having big brother threaten a lawsuit... that is so 20th century.

I also wrote to four restaurants that have been featured on the show: Grinders in Kansas City, Panini Pete's in Fairhope, AL, Gorilla BBQ in Northern California and Baby Blues BBQ in Southern California. "As a restaurant owner who has seen marked results from being featured on the show, would you care to comment with your related thoughts and perspectives?"

Gorilla BBQ:
Dora,
Gorilla Barbeque, LLC does not have a comment at this time. We will review our company's information on the aforementioned fan sites and return a comment at a later date.
Thanks,
Jeff

Stretch, from Grinders:
Hmm why? Can't they do the app? Is there money involved?

At the time of this writing, we have not received replies from the other two restaurateurs.

We can only conjecture that "money involved" may, in fact, be the issue at hand. iPhone applications frequently charge a monthly service fee, which compensate the developers for their time, talents, research and updates. I can attest - it takes A LOT of time to do the job right.

Does Scripps (via FoodNetwork.com) list all the restaurants featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives? Yes they do. But they do NOT list them by City, State nor Zip Code. One of the phenomenal phenomena related to the show is the quantity of people who take DDD-inspired road trips on the heels of Guy Fieri.

One can not plan a road trip based on a list of restaurants sorted by air date.

Our opinion, at this point: Scripps, via the Food Network, has missed the ball on social and mobile networking, and now they're running interference on fans and entrepreneurs who've picked up the ball and run it into the end zone, filling a once-void niche in the market. 4 Fans by Fans is the way of Web 2.0.

More updates and further comments as I hear of them.

Superior's Anchor Bar to be featured on "Triple D"

A camera crew for the Food Network sailed into Superior, Wisconsin Anchor Bar and Grill Thursday, July 1, 2010, to tape a segment for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Guy Fieri was not at the Anchor yesterday, and Food Network communications staff would not comment on when or if he would be in the area.

The Anchor Bar is known for their specialty burgers ranging from the cashew burger and olive burger to the hearty Anchor burger, serving the downtown Superior area for more than 30 years.

According to The Duluth News Tribune, "representatives from the Food Network declined to comment on the closed shoot or when the segment would air. But patrons enjoyed the hustle, bustle and noise. Some joked that the bright camera lights illuminated items on the walls and ceiling they hadn’t seen before."

I'll update this post as more information comes in.

Guy Fieri and the film crews from Page Productions are (at least, they were,) scheduled to hit the Detroit, Michigan area sometime in the next two weeks.

Spokane, Washington looks to be a future shoot pod for Page Productions, the company that creates the show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. @spokanescene: Food Network Chef Guy Fieri will be in Spokane August 2010 for the filming of his show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives!

And it looks like Colorado is finally on Page Production's agenda - @outlawjosiej: hello, Colorado! What are the best diners, drive-ins, dives, and all-around awesome restaurants in Denver, Boulder, CO Springs?
