Guy Fieri with Ed Wilson on Pulled Pork Sandwiches

I have to admit I'm not as fond of the recent episodes of Guy's Big Bite as I have been in the past. This newest season features cooks, chefs and owners of restaurants Guy has visited on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I guess the idea is to run with what works, or that Guy feels (or the network, the fans?) that a 7-minute spot isn't enough to share with the world what these places have to offer. Yet I feel as if I've already seen that food, and I'm looking for something new, innovative and different. Well, since I'm not in charge of the world ... here goes.

Today's episode, July 5, 2009, was called It's Always Finer in Carolina. It repeats on July 21, 2009. (Check the show's index page for future airings.)

Guy Fieri invited guest Ed Wilson from Wilson's Holy Smoked BBQ to the show, to roast a pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches with Wilson's Carolina vinegar sauce and slaw. They also made Wilson's mac 'n' cheese.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Wilsons' BBQ Award Wining Eastern Carolina Vinegar Sauce

1 quart cider vinegar
1 cup water
1/8 cup red pepper flakes
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoons Worcestershire
1 tablespoons kosher salt
1 tablespoons black pepper
1 16-ounce bottle ketchup



Wilson's debuted on February 9, 2009 in the Smokin' BBQ episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The episode also featured their Black-Eyed Pea Salad.

    I've caught a couple of recent episodes of GBB, and have to agree with you that I'm not as big of a fan of Guy having previous guests of DDD on to showcase their dishes. Even though Guy still isn't one of my favorites, I would like to see more of his own creations rather than a rehash of dishes that we've seen before. I guess that Food Network has made the decision to let Guy use his stand-up cooking show to showcase the actual recipes. GBB is not Guy's favorite show, by his own admission, so maybe he's willing to share the spotlight a little. DDD is a better medium for Guy. I will admit that I do enjoy that show a little more. Not so much with Guy Off the Hook though. Too much like Emeril Live.

  2. I'm smiling. It would surprise me to hear Guy say he's willing to share the spotlight! haha. But truthfully, I know he has faith in these restaurants and honestly feels they deserve the kind of attention a national commercial could give. Of course, these places can't afford those kinds of advertising costs - so this is something he can do in lieu of that.

    But yes, I honestly do prefer the episodes of GBB when he's just cooking on his own. At those times, he's more concentrated on the food.

    I agree that Guy Off the Hook was not as successful as he and the FN executives hoped. I think the experience was fun for the live audience, but somehow it didn't translate well on camera??

    But then, what do I know! haha, thanks for your comments, Buckykatt.

    p.s. I did have a nice 4th. You? I made the Tequila Lime Tart. It was a roaring success, and now everyone thinks I'm a rock star! haha.

  4. I am pissed at Guy...

    and i hope im wrong in the long run, i come from an area that is predommanately black. I have a lot of black friends. I was watching the ed wilson episode and was discusted and horrified to hear guy repetatively calling him brother and at one point, when Wilson was about to make the barbeque sauce he said " you go BOY" You might think that it was innocent and in fun Guy but I and alot of my friends have lost respect for you...We know you are not necessarily prejudiced...but you are lacking respect...poor Ed wilson, could have been insulted, if he wasn't sooo nervous....

  5. To the previous poster, quit looking for ways to get your feelings hurt. Guy also called Ed Wilson "bro" and "dude" and "buddy" and "friend" if you didn't notice.

    The fact is that Guy treated Ed just as he would have treated anyone else. That is exactly theopposite of racism. By your standard, we should treat people differently because of their color. That is closer to racism than anything Guy did on that episode.

    Knock off the witch hunt. Guy showed nothing but respect for Ed and his food. As for these recipes's I can't wait to add Ed's sauce and Mac recipe to my dinners. That dude has his "PHD in deliciousness"
