Father and son, on toothpicks and corn dog sticks

Dan Taylor on the fine arts scene at the Press Democrat encouraged his readers to send in homemade artwork. Local resident Al Travasso and his five-year-old son, Tony submitted this photo to the ARTS blog:

Guy Fieri and his portrait with artists Tony and Al Travasso

“We rummaged through dumpsters at his restaurants for labels of bottles and bottle caps, over 150, then painted his picture over it,” Al wrote. “His hair is made of toothpicks and old corn dog sticks (Tony’s favorite.)”

The Travassos gave the finished painting to Fieri last March, but Al preserved the moment in the photograph shown above.

Happy Father's Day!

Guy Fieri to cook with Petty and Wood

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 is a 350-kilometer (220 mi) NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event held annually at Infineon Raceway (website) at Sears Point in Sonoma, California, held over Father's Day Weekend, June 18-20, 2010.

A featured bit of TNT's "Countdown to Green" pre-race coverage is the "Ponytail Express," a NASCAR road trip with Kyle Petty and Rutledge Wood. This week, Petty and Wood are cooking with Guy Fieri at his restaurant, Johnny Garlic’s in Santa Rosa.

Click here to view last and this years' "Ponytail Express" videos.

TNT televises the race on Sunday, June 20, live from Infineon Raceway. Pre-race coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. Pacific, and the Toyota/Save Mart 350 begins at 3 p.m. ET / noon Pacific.

More at www.nascar.com. You can follow Kyle Petty on Twitter @kylepetty and Rutledge Wood @RutledgeWood.

In 2008, Guy Fieri was named Grand Marshal of the Toyota/Save Mart 350. In 2009, he attended simply as a race fan.

And although Guy's company, Knuckle Sandwich, is no longer listed as official sponsor, Tommy Baldwin Racing is on the unofficial entry list for the race, with driver Brian Simo in #36.

Pix from "wake up with waffles" event in NYC

This morning, from 6:00 am to noon ET, Hampton Hotels, Guy Fieri and his son Hunter, handed out an estimated 7000 free waffles to New Yorkers at Herald Square Park in New York City. It was quite the media event.

Above: Old-Block and Chip-Off-The-Old-Block ;)

I expect there'll be more pictures and video from the event - I'll update this post with more as they come in.

Guy Fieri cooks up pork tacos at Good Housekeeping

EaterNY reported yesterday that Guy Fieri was causing a stir in the New York Times cafeteria, but what looked more interesting to me was his stirring up Pork Tacos with Rosemary Ellis, editor in chief of Good Housekeeping.

Regular readers and fans will recognize Rosemary as one of the judges from Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Watermelon Pork Tacos in Lettuce Shells - recipe

from Food Network Magazine

Ingredients

For the pork:
2 pork tenderloins (about 2 pounds), silver skin trimmed, cut into 1-inch-thick slices
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger
1 tablespoon seeded and minced serrano chile
2 tablespoons minced fresh garlic
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

For the salsa:
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 cup small (about 1/4 inch)watermelon cubes
1/4 English cucumber, seeded and cut into 1/4-inch cubes
1 Hass avocado, pitted, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch cubes
4 large, sturdy romaine-heart leaves, cut into 4-inch lengths (to resemble taco shells)

Directions
Combine all the pork ingredients in a resealable plastic bag and marinate for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, for the salsa, whisk together the rice vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce and sesame oil in a medium bowl. Gently fold in the watermelon, cucumber and avocado. Refrigerate until chilled.

Preheat a grill to medium heat. Remove the pork from the marinade, pat dry and grill for 2 minutes on one side. Turn and grill 1 more minute; remove from the heat and let rest 3 minutes before cutting into 1/2-inch pieces.

Fill the lettuce "shells" with pork, top with salsa and devour!

Guy Fieri's own production company, Ragtop Productions, worked in conjunction with Page Productions (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) last year on Tailgate Warriors, a competition between two tailgate teams at the Bills vs. Bears NFL game in Buffalo, NY.

According to the Tailgate Warriors Facebook page:

If this is you, email us team & recipe info, photos of the team & rig to
tailgate@pageprod.com.

Page Productions is presently only taking submissions from the following cities/games:

Aug 21st - GB vs Seattle

I was just thinking ... how genius it would be for some hotel chain to hook up with Triple D restaurants. Maybe a bi-directional 5% discount? Man, if I were a hotel chain, I'd do it. :)

Speaking of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, if you're like me and won't be in New York on Thursday, June 17, you can make your own waffles and thank Guy Fieri for at least introducing 'em to us. :)
