Fans visit over 100 Diners, Drive-ins and Dives

On Monday's Season 10 premiere of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, the show returns to Hillbilly Hotdogs in West Virginia on the day two super fans, Roger and Jane Holm, visit their 100th restaurant on the Triple D list. At the time of this writing, they've been to over 124 restaurants from the Food Network program, following in Guy Fieri's footsteps.

"Our 100th restaurant featured on Triple D and was it ever a spectacular party!" Jane Holm writes from Facebook, "Sonny and Sharie, their family, staff and friends went all out to make our day absolutely perfect!"

Visit Family Joints DV1001H for more information on the 10th season premiere episode, future air dates and times.

I'm keeping in touch with dozens of fans of the show, many hitting their 20th, 50th and a few now having visited over 100 restaurants that have been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Perhaps my best Triple D buddy and pen pal has been Dr. Robert McCleland, who recently visited his 100th DDD in, of all places, Hawaii, with his family. Both Jane and "The Robster" have helped me enormously by collecting pictures of "Guy Ate Here," spray-painted tags on the walls of featured restaurants. My thanks to you both. :) Further, may I also thank the dozens of others who keep me organized, true and honest with my Triple D information and database.

Listen to Dr. DDD on Restaurant Radio. Click here.

When Rob asked my opinion on which Hawaii Triple D restaurant should be his 100th, I recommended Poke Stop.

Chef Elmer Guzman wrote from Twitter, "I'm honored that Rob McCleland visited Poke Stop for his 100th diners drive in and dives restaurant."

While in Hawaii, Rob kept account of all the restaurants on Oahu. And now, in his own words:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Triple D—Aloha Style!

I recently spent a week on Oahu and had the privilege of eating at the seven Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives (yes, there were some of each!). First off, hats off to Triple D and Page Productions for putting the list together. I understand that the Hawaii Bureau of Tourism really wanted the show to visit the Aloha State. The joints they picked were very good. They had a wide range of Triple D delights, from the most authentic Hawaiian you could imagine (Highway Inn), to some unbelievably good Asian Fusion (Poke Stop), with several great stops in between. Funky joints with good food, they just happen to be off the mainland!

First stop was Nico’s Pier 38, the closest joint to the airport. If you watched this episode you’ll remember that Nico hits the giant fish market early every morning. Trust me, his fastidious control is worth it in every bite. We ordered the catch of the day and the largest selling, Furikake Pan-Seared Ahi Tuna w/ Ginger Garlic Cilantro sauce. I’m salivating just thinking about how good it was (seriously). It’s a small place in an industrial area, but totally worth the stop

Next up, Murphy’s Irish Pub, a couple of miles from Nico’s. I met Don, the owner, who was nice as can be. The funkiness of this place is derived from the fact that is half Irish fine dining and half sports bar, with good food on both sides of the house. Standard comfort food prepared the right way for the long haul—it’s what earned them a well-deserved spot on the show. I wish I could have been there for some of the World Cup games.

Hank’s Haute Dogs. Very funky, reminiscent of Fab Hot Dogs in Los Angeles. Got love their funky ways of dressing up the dogs (think mango/pineapple relish, or the Lobster sausage!). While I’m not a dog connoisseur, these were excellent. The counter help was excellent, you could tell they believed in their product! My only suggestion would be serving the dogs a little hotter. These would be “warm dogs” rather than hot dogs. On round two we asked for hotter dogs and they were perfect. Yelp reviewers had the same suggestion.

The Rainbow Inn—this place is a classic. We were the only Houlis (white people) at the place, and every parking space was full. This is one of those local joints that need to know what and how to order when you arrive or you look like an idiot. I’ve found that “give me what he got on the show” works well in these situations. Food was good, cheap, and there was plenty of it.

Germaine’s Luau does have the best luau food (in my many trips to the islands). Most luaus are simply about feeding people quickly and putting on a show; the quality of the food is usually an afterthought. Not here. You get the good show with a great host, but the food is center stage. Since you’re going to attend a luau anyway, make it this one.

I’ve saved the best two for last. One of the two I expected to be good—but it was great! I did not have high expectations for the other one, but it was outstanding as well! “Whoa, Dr. M, how could you not expect a Triple D to be fantastic?” Good question that is worth asking.

When you watch the TV segment for the Highway Inn you see how truly authentic the food is. Guy has a great appreciation for the authenticity of preparation and the old school methods that have been preserved. My experience is that most “fully authentic” cuisine is not as tasty to uninitiated palate. Boy was I wrong! The Highway Inn is THE REAL DEAL on about a million levels. First of all the history of the place is remarkable. The daughters have done a great job capturing the historical context and the importance that food plays in the culture. Second, wow was that food good! I tried 3 or 4 dishes and each one was multi-dimensional, full palate, unique tasting, and downright delicious! Third, this place is special. I’ve been to over 100 Triple Ds and this is one of the best when it comes to caring, giving back, and making a difference in the community.

I had the good fortune of talking to Monica, one of the daughters who returned to Hawaii to run the place when the dad had a medical issue. She was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. You can tell that this family is “all in” when it comes to making outstanding food and making a difference. The Highway Inn isn’t in downtown Honolulu, you have to make a 25 minute drive out of town. It’s worth every mile it to support a place with great food that is doing it right on so many levels. You’ll thank me for this one.

My personal favorite in Hawaii was my 100th Triple D: Poke Stop. Hodad’s in San Diego was my 50th Triple D; I wanted someplace just as special for my 100th. Dora told me that she and Chef Guzman had tweeted a couple of times and that she thought this would be a great place—it was outstanding. The flavor combinations, the freshness, the family atmosphere… it blew me away. Chef Guzman worked for and was mentored by both Emeril and Sam Choy. You can see the fun when you walk in the door and you taste the flavor with every bite. Chef Guzman and his family were very kind to my family. This is the kind of place that you could eat at two or three nights a week and never tire of it. When you watch the episode you’ll see Guy’s reaction. That was my reaction as well—and soon it will be yours. Enjoy.

Guy Fieri, at Humbolt County Fair

The Times Standard was on hand to visit with the folks of Ferndale at the Humbolt County Fair, Thursday, August 12, 2010, when Guy Fieri made his appearance. Guy hosted the "In It to Win It" BBQ competition, opening day at the fair.

"As the sun finally cut through the fog draping the Humboldt County Fair, Guy Fieri took center stage on Thursday. The hometown star's appearance in the early afternoon put smiles on the faces of fairgoers, who waited in anticipation to ask questions and shake hands."

Guy Fieri was born in Ohio, but raised in Ferndale. He goes back to visit several times a year.”He never forgets where he came from,” said Adena Bohn, who used to babysit Fieri.

”As you enjoy the fair, please remember that community means everything,” Guy Fieri said. “This is one of the best.”

Lori Jones said, "opening day of fair. Lots of people. Guy Fieri was there for the BBQ cookoff. Hopefully the photos I took will turn out. Too many people were in front of me blocking the view. Sampled some of the BBQ and it was great."

Doug Culbert had a fun time at the fair. "Got to see Guy Fieri, which was pretty cool."

And Sarah Annis Ireland had fun at the fair too, "with my beautiful boys today...Guy Fieri signed Connor's cast, the very thing he has been waiting for since the day he got the casts! Thanks, Guy, for making my Boo's wish come true!"

The New York Times caught up with Guy Fieri's live cooking demonstration in Atlantic City, late July, 2010, and wrote an excellent article about the appeal he had to his fans as well as some insightful comments about his detractors.

"... this platinum-haired, heavily tattooed chef-dude has proved that he has a Sarah Palin-like ability to reach Americans who feel left behind by the nation’s cultural (or, in his case, culinary) elite." [image]

"The fact that it was 3 o’clock in the afternoon, that there were numerous children and oxygen-toting seniors in the seats, and that he wasn’t about to do anything more radical than sear a duck breast didn’t do anything to diminish the energy Mr. Fieri brought to the stage. The charisma that recently inspired a middle-aged mom to throw her lavender-colored bra onstage during a cooking demonstration was on full display.

And although his props and costumes evoke a hard-core rebelliousness, his persona is friendly and jovial, serving up a solid helping of American family values with a garnish of patriotism."
He says that his chef-rock star-sports fan persona reflects his real passions: food, family, music, fast cars, sports and generally having an excellent time. Now, he worries about turning that persona into a person, with a lasting following and a real culinary agenda.

“Look, the fame rocket is only on the upward trajectory for a limited time,” he said in an interview a few days after the show, riding in the back of a car between television shoots in the Philadelphia suburbs. “I have to do what I can for the program while it lasts.”

"He’d rather have the loud love of the guys in the audience at Caesars than awards from the James Beard Foundation." [image]
Mr. Fieri has worked in the restaurant business steadily for 25 years, and although the politics of food isn’t his priority, he is smart enough to be genuinely worried about the real issues facing his industry and his audience.

“Will organics prevail?” he asked, furrowing his rubbery, normally cheerful face as he fretted that America is at a culinary crossroads. “I don’t know. Will schools get the funding they need to feed our kids? Will we be able to bring back all the cooking skills that got lost in the drive-through and the microwave?”

Guy Fieri Foundation launch, Eddie recalls and a First Pitch

The Contra Costa Times recently interviewed Guy Fieri about his hosting the opening day at the 114th annual Humboldt County Fair.

"... he's glad to use his fame to promote the place where he grew up.
There's really no bigger reward, I think, than being able to come home and offer what you gained in life and the experience you gain, and share it with the place and people that helped form you.

Humboldt County Fair Manager Stuart Titus said he remembers coaching Fieri when he was a seventh grade football player. "He's kind of filled in since then with all the diners, drive-ins and dives, and stuff, but he's always had that twinkle in his eyes."

Fieri will at the fair between noon and 4 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010, hosting the barbecue contest between local rotary clubs as well as partaking in other activities.
I'm getting a kick out of coming back

This appearance at the fair launches Guy Fieri's nonprofit, the Guy Fieri Foundation for Inspiration and Imagination.

With his new foundation, Fieri hopes to eventually donate 25 to 50 pretzel carts a year to schools or youth organizations. The carts are being built in Ferndale.
It's the old teach them to fish theory. It's a great vehicle that teaches young adults the entrepreneurial environment.

Fieri wants the first cart to go to the place that helped him realize his potential -- Ferndale Elementary School. He said the school, and specifically his eighth grade teacher, Fran Moriarty Fischer, helped him to become the person he is today.
I've done it all -- done everything I've ever imagined I'd want to do, too. And this event has got to be in the top three things in my career. It has me grinning ear to ear.

Fans of Ultimate Recipe Showdown may remember Eddie Huang, from the "Party Food" episode, aired on March 21st, 2010. Huang has opened two restaurants in the past six months, Baohaus and Xiao Ye in New York.

Zen Kimchi recently asked Huang what was it like meeting and working with Food Network chef Guy Fieri?
Ha, ha. You know, going into the show, I thought he was going to be a s— show. Food Network has tapes of my interview, [in which] I’m imitating him, making fun of his backwards glasses, etc. But, in person, he’s really cool. You hear it all the time, “This guy’s down to Earth,” but it’s true. He’s a good dude — lower voice than on TV, knows his food, about his business.

Guy Fieri, on coffee and counting vegetables

The Daily Grind caught up with Guy Fieri at a recent food festival in South Carolina. They talked coffee!

How do you prefer to make your coffee? I have a Breville espresso machine that someone gave me. I love it. Normally I’ll use a French press for coffee. No drip machines allowed.

Do you make your own? I do. I grind my own beans for every cup. It’s just like pepper. I crack my own pepper fresh when I use it. ... Quit grinding your coffee at the store or buying pre-ground.

Any certain way you enjoy your coffee? I enjoy Americano’s.

Last few tidbits from AC Festival 2010

Here are a few last comments from the Atlantic City Wine & Food Festival, held in the first weekend of August, 2010.

Food Network host Guy Fieri, in town for the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival, brought his wife, Lori, to the Pier Shops at Caesars, where she picked up a $448 handbag at Michael Kors. - www.philly.com

"Over 700 food fanatics swarmed the Caesars Palladium Ballroom. Two contestants from AC; 2 from Philly. Talk about a border war! The winner was a local -- Tony Baloney's.

Saturday started by intro'ing Guy at his Big Bite Brunch @ Phillips Seafood Restaurant, on the pier. .... They oversold the event, so I had the pleasure of welcoming nearly 300 peeps to this gathering. The menu was conceived by Guy and his team (led by the unflappably talented Korina).... It was, to put it mildly, unique.

• Drink ~ Mai Tai oh My – fresh fruit and juices blended with Cazadoras Reposado tequila
• Gratis ~ Garlic Parmesan Crab, with King Crab topped with garlic a lemon aioli (mayo) and panko, then broiled
• 1st course ~Grilled polenta with a crawfish Etouffee “Guy style”
• 2nd course ~ Tequila Turkey Fettuccini with Cazadoras Reposado tequila
• Dessert ~ Coffee Banana’s Foster French Toast with Formica Challah Bread

... Guy's cooking demo. .... Turns out he SOLD OUT the frickin' theater (Circus Maxximus) to the tune of 1600 people!! .... Guy had 'em eating out of his hand, pardon the pun, the entire time. To be honest, the food he demo'ed is overshadowed by this guy's personality and charm and energy. For the record, he prepared Duck Fried Rice and Blackened Sesame Salmon." - Rich Cooks

Not only did Guy Fieri set out across southern New Jersey to record segments for his popular Diners, Drive-ins and Dives series, but the spiked-haired chef — who also hosts the game show Minute to Win It on NBC — is seriously thinking of opening a restaurant in Atlantic City.

“Serious as a heart attack,” the 42-year-old California native said. “You give me a year, 18 months at the most, and I’m gonna have a restaurant here. Bet on it.” - Atlantic City Weekly
