iPhone Apps for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives

*Update* Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Locator has been renamed "TV Diner." Click here for more information.

So far, I've found three different iPhone Apps for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I wish I could review them, but I don't have an iPhone! So instead, I'll just list what I know and let you, the iPhone readers (iReaders?), check them out for yourselves.

At the time of this writing, there have been some 315 restaurants featured on the show, with another 50 or so locations that have been filmed but not yet aired. That's a lot of information to track! Especially in the restaurant business - some locations have closed (either temporarily or permanently), at least one has moved, some have opened new locations with their new-found increase in business and several have changed management and/or ownership since Guy Fieri was there.

I think iPhone App customers will be looking for ease of use, accuracy of information and quantity of information such as the inclusion of menus, recipes, video, pictures, etc.

As far as I can tell, Rick over at Flavor Town, USA was the first to develop an iPhone Application for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. *Upgraded Flavortown software for iPhone on iTunes*

If you're going to be traveling around doing Road Trips to all these great places, you're going to need a travel companion to show you where all of the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives locations are. - www.flavortownusa.com/iPhone-Application

Flavor Town, USA is an easy-to-use website with very current information. Rick and I have worked together several times to ensure what we post is accurate. To purchase Flavor Town, USA from iTunes, click here.

The next one I heard about is Triple D App, the unofficial companion to the hit Food Network show "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" with Guy Fieri.

We've created the single biggest and most complete (and up to date) collection on the Internet. Catch up on any missed episodes of Diners Drive-Ins and Dives right here or on your iPhone or Android mobile phone! - www.tripledapp.com

Triple D App is designed and maintained by Kokopelli Software LLC. I've been in touch with these developers too. They upload new locations within a day or two of the premiere air date and episode video and restaurant menus when available. To purchase Triple D App from iTunes, click here.

The most recent addition to the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives iPhone App store is from MapMuse.

If you're looking for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives -- Guy Fieri locations in your area you've come to the right place. Our Diners, Drive-ins and Dives -- Guy Fieri map and directory currently have 308 Diners, Drive-ins and Dives -- Guy Fieri locations and if you know of one that's missing you can always add it. While you're here, be sure to check out our related locator categories like Restaurants! - http://find.mapmuse.com

According to the information I have been able to collect, MapMuse is still missing a few locations; most likely because the addresses listed on FoodNetwork.com do not coincide with current mapping software. But we too have been in touch, and MapMuse is researching their database of information and will update their app with new locations within a week or two of their air dates. *Update* - Map Muse is current up to 6/2010 ~D.

To purchase the (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Locator has been renamed) "TV Diner" on iTunes, click here.

Interested in more Food Network apps? Check out this video from iphonedemos. If you're a Food Network Junkie, then the Food Network Nighttime App is for you. Catch up with your favorite nighttime shows on your iPhone, or iPod touch. Select from the show you want to watch. Pick from a list of clips from that series, and be careful not to drool while you watch. Along the bottom you have other features of the app. You can browse photos from different Food Network series, or search through the recipes section to find something to cook for dinner. Even more convenient, tap the On TV feature, and a Current daily schedule will help you plan what you want to watch. See what's cooking with the Food Network App.

The Food Network Nighttime App does not have a map function.

Pictures and stories from DDD shoot in JAX and SSI

*Update*
For updates on the Southern Soul BBQ fire, click here.

I thought the Houston, Texas diners, drive-ins and dives locations were popular. And they were! Are, actually. Houstoners obviously love their local joints. Since the day those restaurants were filmed and almost every day since, "Houston Texas" has been the single most popular search term that brings readers to this blog, my Triple D episode guide and to my colleague's YouTube channel. That is, until now.

Not even Guy Fieri's appearance on the pre-game show to the Super Bowl has brought so many visitors to this site, as has his filming of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives in Jacksonville, Florida and nearby San Simons Island, Georgia. Jacksonvillers (Jacksonvillians? haha) love their local joints too.

Photographer Bruce Lipsky was on hand at Singleton's Seafood Shack in Mayport, on Monday, February 22, 2010 in Jacksonville, FL to capture images of Guy Fieri and the Triple D crew taping their segment. Click here to view.

Taping of the Metro Diner was covered by the Jax Daily Record, and Jacksonville.com wrote a story on the same shoot, which describes seven locations in the area, but I counted eight. They forgot to list (or didn't know about) the Metro Diner. When describing the day's shoot at Singleton's, they write, "Monday's drizzly sky had cleared, so (Guy Fieri) and his crew were headed a few hundred feet away for a quick impromptu ride on a shrimp boat." For the full story, click here.

Also on Monday, Triple D visited 13 Gypsies in Jacksonville, where several food bloggers and writers were present to witness the filming. Nancy White captured a few pictures both outside and inside the popular eatery. And Jacksonville.com has a nice story about it too. Click here to read.

Many people ask, "is this a diner, drive-in or dive?" And frequently the answer is none of the above. The show is looking for locally owned and operated restaurants, with only one or two locations owned by the same company. They look for places with character, history and a story to tell.

The DDD crew also visited Southern Soul BBQ on on St. Simons Island, Georgia, on the morning of Tuesday, February 23, where John Strande snapped a few pictures. Click here to see the full set. (Image1, Image2, Image5)

Shoots for the remaining locations finishes up today, Thursday, February 25, 2010. Please click here for a full list the eight, recently filmed Triple D locations in North Florida and South Georgia.

Guy Fieri considers return to Tahoe Celebrity Golf, CigarBQ

Guy Fieri, who wowed the crowd at Edgewood Tahoe, South Shore Lake Tahoe last year, is cooking up plans for the 2010 American Century Championship with another appearance. Keep up to date by visiting www.tahoecelebritygolf.com for upcoming celebrity announcements.

The 21st Tahoe Celebrity Golf Week will run from Tuesday, July 13th through Sunday, July 18th, 2010. Portions of the tournament will be televised on NBC Sports. *Update* Guy Fieri is confirmed at Tahoe Celebrity Golf.

Organizers of CigarBQ are also counting on Guy Fieri to attend their event again this year. CigarBQ is scheduled for Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Saralee's Vinyard in Sonoma County, CA. *Update* Guy Fieri will NOT attend CigarBQ; instead, he is scheduled to perform live at the San Diego County Fair on that day.

Guy Fieri was recently on the cover of Smoke Magazine and has been a long-time aficionado of cigars. And of wine. And BBQ, for that matter. Haha. I wondered last year if this event was made for him. Hmmm?

CigarBQ is a "cigar and fun" raiser for the YWCA of Sonoma County. Guy has not yet committed, but organizers say he hasn't missed a year yet. Find out more at www.cigarbq.com.

Mr. Fieri goes to Washington

Jimmy Stewart went to Washington in a 1939 movie with a political motive and an iconic filibuster. The National Ledger recently reported that Guy Fieri is going to Washington D.C. too, but with plans to cook for the Obamas and the White House staff, next month.
The dynamic Fieri assures us the event will not be recorded for the cameras, that "This is something that has nothing to do with television." He adds, "My 13-year-old son, Hunter, is going to cook with me. He's done so before, on some of my 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' Food Network show. [Er, that would be Guy's Big Bite and Guy Off the Hook. ~D] I have strong feelings about educating children through the empowerment of cooking. My son Ryder wants to cook with me, too, but he's only 4 so we'll wait a bit."
For the White House menu, Guy Fieri said he'd make "a little Italian and something creative -- a BLT sandwich made with duck." Would that be a DBLT? I'd trade that for a filibuster any day.
Slamma Jamma Parmigiana - Food NetworkTV

A January 2010 article in the Press Democrat mentioned Guy Fieri's desire to visit the White House, "he's preparing to visit the White House and the Obamas to promote cooking with kids," so this is something that has been in the works for quite some time.

Guy Fieri has long supported young people learning how to cook and to consider culinary arts has a hobby at least, or as a profession. He has been actively involved in the National ProStart program, with a recent television special, Top of the Class, and by hiring high school culinary students to help cook, prep and serve during the Guy Fieri Road Show.

In May 2009, Guy Fieri teamed up again with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver passing a resolution that the second Saturday in May be proclaimed "Cook With Your Kids Day" in California. Guy has said he wants to take it national.

That sounds like a nice conversation to have over a DBLT, eh?
-------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, Guy Fieri is scheduled to appear on the new / old Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 10, 2010. Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame is also scheduled to be on the show.

As with all things Fieri-related, initial reactions to Guy's involvement with Minute to Win It are mixed. People who don't like him on the Food Network aren't going to like him on this show either. Many claim that having three shows on the Food Network and now a fourth on NBC is an over-exposure (if there exists such a thing in the entertainment industry). And foodie purists (for lack of a better term?) argue that hosting a game show will reduce Guy Fieri's standing and reputation as a chef.

On the other hand, the gazillions (an AMA-approved, technically correct mathematical term) of people who do enjoy Guy Fieri's enthusiasms and energy on the Food Network, and the many proponents of family-oriented television programing and game shows, are by and large eager to see Minute to Win It succeed.

You ask my opinion? Well, in 60 seconds or less, I humbly predict that M2WI will be extremely successful at first and will run at least a year, more likely two. Then, not unlike Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Deal or No Deal, it will fade from prime time to day time and away.

But that's just me. Do I win a million dollars?

Guy Fieri makes appearances in his home town

Doesn't it seem odd that a person would make "appearances" in their own home town? But that's exactly what Guy did last night and will again today.

Last night, Friday, February 19, 2010, Guy Fieri and friends were at Johnny Garlic's to sell raffle tickets for the Guy Fieri customized Harley-Davidson motorcycle in support of Friends Raising Funds.

He will make another appearance today, Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Michael's Harley-Davidson of Cotati (website).

The radio station 96.6 Bob FM (website) will be on the premises from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Last week, on February 13, 2010, Guy Fieri made something of a surprise appearance at the Coddington Mall in Santa Rosa, California for their "Can Creation" event.

Local cooks demonstrate healthy, affordable meals and kids play nutrition-themed games during the second-annual Can Creation. Bring a canned food item and take home free cookbooks and other give-aways. Check out sculptures local businesses created entirely from canned goods to highlight the Redwood Empire Food Bank's year-round need for donations of healthy foods.

Avila's in Dallas on ice until further notice ...

The Dallas Observer recently reported some family squabbles among the owners of the popular Diners, Drive-ins and Dives restaurant, Avila's, in Dallas Texas. Yesterday, they reported that the restaurant is closed, building gutted of equipment, and the Avila family embroiled in suits and counter-suits.
Late Sunday night, Ricardo Avila -- who has been more or less the face of his family's 25-year-old restaurant for years -- went in and gutted the place, going so far as to cut a hole in the wall where the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives plaque had been hung following the restaurant's appearance on the Food Network show.
The article went on to say,
There was a court hearing scheduled for today, following Ricardo's filing a restraining order on February 9. That hearing was canceled Monday, but Octavio and other family members say another suit's on the way: Anita is suing Ricardo "for defamation," says Octavio, who insists he's "heartbroken" over the events.
Click here to read more about this sad turn of events.

*Update* More information on Avila's legal battles, click here.

On a much happier note, Guy Fieri continued to take in ice events at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. He was sighted at the U.S. Hockey game vs. Norway, where Team U.S.A. won the match, and at the men's figure skating event, where the U.S. won gold.

Go Team U.S.A.!

This morning, Thursday, February 18, 2010, Guy Fieri appears on Today on NBC about his upcoming game show, Minute to Win It.

Video of Guy Fieri's interview with Matt Lauer.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Guy Fieri's appearance on Today follows close on the heels of NBC's announcement that the debut of Minute to Win It will be two straight hours. M2WI will preempt Dateline NBC and air Sunday, March 14, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. ET.

Guy Fieri flew to Vancouver, BC for his Today Show segment on Wednesday the 17th (tweet) and took in some short track speed skating while there (tweet, photo with fan).

Guy Fieri is also scheduled to appear at Johnny Garlic's (which one has not yet been confirmed, but I speculate it will be at the JG's in Santa Rosa) to sign copies of the cookbook More Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The book signing is scheduled for 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010. (tweet)

The evening is, in part, a benefit for Friends Raising Funds.

Exact dates and times for filming the show are estimates at best. No promises, ok? Haha. As Guy Fieri explained in a recent interview (listen), the show gets its best footage when the restaurant is not overcrowded, just with the restaurant's regular customers and operating in a natural, organic way. It is likely that the restaurants may be closed when Guy Fieri is there, filming the segments in the kitchens.

Click here to view all of the new diners, drive-ins and dives Guy Fieri has visited in N. Florida and S. Georgia.

Expect these JAX and SSI episodes to air on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network any time from early May through the summer months of 2010.

And speaking of Florida, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival is gearing up. The Online Auction started January 25 and ends March 8, 2010. Click here to see what's up for auction.

I thought that the Private Cooking Class & Gourmet Lunch in Food Network Kitchens sounded like a lot of fun, and the Create your own burger that will be featured at Spike's Good Stuff Eatery too.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival runs February 25 - 28, 2010. Guy Fieri's major event is the closing party, Guy’s Luna En Fuego Party co-presented by Gnarly Head Wines and Miami New Times (info), set for Sunday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m., now Sold Out.

Guy Fieri is also set to make appearances at South Beach Diet presents Fun & Fit as a Family featuring Kellogg's Kidz Kitchen, scheduled on both Saturday (info) and Sunday (info), February 27 and 28, 2010.

Guy Fieri also stopped by a Los Angeles sound studio to do voice overs for Triple D, at Creative Media Recording with Tim Keenan.

And Guy Fieri's interview with Dennis Miller is available for download, or you can listen to it on iTunes. Click here to download or listen, but don't read the text there. What a debacle!
